    Sigh.

    Decorum, people!!

There is a right and a wrong way to go about things! At least tell her to cover the kids ears and give a good reason to not want to touch the damn things!! Tell her they might have rabies or something first!

This just gets the antigunners and anti cop people all in a tizzy.

Yeah, I got problems with the kittens being killed, I mean euthanized(ya know, PC and all, means the same F'ing thing).

Think the cop could have gone about it differently. Disciplinary action of some sort would be called for IMO, not sure he needs to be fired.

It also seems the article is written from the mothers side of the story. Not sure if she may be demonizing the cop a little.

If the cop opened fire on the kittens in the family's back yard, I have serious problems with that. ESPECIALLY if one or more children witnessed it. If these kittens needed to be disposed of, they should have been taken somewhere and euthanized properly. A .40 cal slug on a kitten is just a little bit of overkill...

"These cats are a nuisance. The government needs to take care of this.

Holy shit! The government just killed all the cute kittens!
Somebody must be held accountable. "

Damn lady! Make up your feeble mind.

I really hope, as the cop was designated animal control, he had a .22lr or even a pellet gun.

    To the other points:

I have no issue with disposing of nuance animals.

    A couple points,
This guy was a retired police officer of 30+ years

Who got hired as animal control, which I I guess is under police department in that county.

I really don't have a problem disposing of an animal in that manner, if that's what you're gonna do. A bullet is a heck of a lot cheaper than a lethal injection.

But it really is a bummer to kill kittens. That's why I never call animal shelters...

I really don't think it matters what caliber was used.

Dead is dead, shot is shot. One just makes you feel better. Both do the same thing in the same way. One just does it better, and not talking about the .22.

Oh, I dunno. Using a larger caliber on a tiny target is ridiculous. And, like I said, if a kid was watching, then it's even worse. The kid will already be upset that the kittens are being shot. Seeing them splatter like a water balloon full of tomato paste is just unnecessarily traumatizing to the kid.

If this guy was animal control, I would hope that he had a .22 for this purpose, but I would think he'd have the decency to do it somewhere else. You just don't kill puppies or kittens in front of little kids.

    I respectfully disagree..

It could have been handled better for sure. I think the animals should have been removed from the home before being disposed. But firing the guy for doing his job just because it doesn't sit well is silly and kind of a lynch mob mentality.

Caliber is irrelevant, its not like your going to be mounting them or making selling fur's. A quick death is ideal.. the bigger the round the more effective. The kids watching.. eh, that's a matter of opinion. I don't see the issue with letting kids see death. We teach children to hunt, they play video games where they are constantly killing people, Hollywood glorifies murder and mayhem, and I'm kinda fed up with the "P.C.-lets-not-offend-anyone" attitude anyway. I guess the relationship humans have with dogs and cats makes the situation a little more sensitive.. but they are just critters. Would you take the roach, mouse, or rat out of sight of your children before you killed it? (personally I wouldn't)

Like I said, I think it would have been better to move the animals away from the home first.

Anything furry that could be construed as "cute" is taken out of my childrens' sight to be killed. My boys are old enough that it's not as much of an issue, but nobody kills small furry animals in front of my daughter. It's not "PC lets-not-offend-anyone" crap, it's called "not reducing a small child to tears unnecessarily".

I'm going to side with the animal cruelty group on this to a degree. While a bullet to take care of an animal is fine, the area and manner in which this was carried out is completely out of line. If I went into my back yard and started popping cats, you would all see me on the news and I would be escorted off my property in cuffs for several reasons, including animal cruelty. There are DOZENS of better, common sense ways to handle this, mainly off property, away from people. Especially when there are kids involved. This is the kind of crap that gives the gun community a black eye.

Lets not forget that the kids were in the house. They saw nothing, just heard the shots. They would have most likely heard the .22 also.

Handled badly, yes. Did it matter if he used a .22 or a .45, makes no difference.

We had a kitten show up at our house. I wanted to get rid of it but didn't because my daughter liked it. One of the dogs caught it eventually.
