I still remember the first Winders machine I ever saw back in high school...I hated the whole mouse thing. I was used to DOS and AutoCAD, and the keyboard was my friend.

I was typing away on this new fandangled computer my wife bought. This windows 3.1...she finally asked me why I didn't use the mouse? What's a mouse?

Time to transfer them bad boys. In my industry 232 serial is still used and I even see 286's on a daily basis

Because we use alot of old programs to pull up stuff created 15 + years ago, we still have old serial port, but 286? really...where the hell do you work, the Smithsonian or the army?

    HVAC controls.

I didn't even think about that...some of these old buildings that upgrade would cost more than it was worth and 286 would be more than needed.

You coould always just flash back and hook it to a 14k modem and dial in one day....

That and the technology has to straddle both the old stuff and the new. Almost nothing new uses it but we still have to talk to the old.

Computers? Oh boy have things changed!
    My firsts?
TRS 80- 17 K of memory and serial cassette tape storage
TRS 80 with twin 5 1/4 floppy drives
TRS 80 laptop with twin 3 1/2 floppy drives and Z8088 processor racing at 4 MHz! A friend taught me how to kick it up to 8MHz....fast, huh?!

    DOS
    Basic programming.
The pre Internet step for me was ERIC which was a reference data base that pulled up abstracts of technical articles. It was on library networks.
The first hard drives were 1 meg and WAY too expensive ($2000). Imagine, a FULL MEG of storage! It was like a cavern.
    Serial Interfaces and BIG cables.
I refused to get into the 'Net for a long time as I saw my sister turn into a chair bound 'Net addict. Finally got into it in 1994-5.

Elmer Keith wrote a book about the development of the .44 magnum and other firearms breakthroughs. It's entitled "Hell, I was there!"
    Computers? Hell, I was there!

    Flash

How about 235 Meg of RAM for $250? Not Gig but Meg. You can now get 8 gig of RAM for $29! There are 1,000 meg in a gig.
    1 Tera is 1000 Giga
    1 Giga is 1000 Mega
    1 Mega is 1000 Kilo

And I recently bought a 1 terabyte external hard drive (for backing up my computer's internal hard drive) for $110.

Last year I got a good deal on a 2 terabyte internal for about that price. I can't wait til it's full! :D

I remember when 8 MB of ram was $250.00
And when going from 33 to 66 MHz processor was a serious speed boost.
