The first few times it's probably hardware, then as it breaks in becomes software. If'n you're friends it might be shareware and when you're done with it it may end up freeware. Put a sticker on it and it becomes adware, as far as I'm aware.

To get us back on subject - I don't have an OWB holster but if I did I would be wearing my M&P 9. If I carry my Shield in my IWB holster, but with my shirt tucked in so the gun is visible, does that count as open carry?
