I'm in the process of building a small coal forge for forging knife blades, out of some scrap iron and steel I have.

I need to find some bituminous coal. Anyone have any ideas? Smallest bag I can find online are 50 pound bags.

If I go home for Christmas I'll stop.

Wait, I'll be armed to the teeth and armed while non tribal member is frowned upon on the rez. Unless your paying them for hunting.

Besides they still arent happy about losing the coal mine jobs.

I'm thinking of being naughty the rest of the year. Maybe Santa will fill up my stocking with some coal!

Well, I can dream of course!
It may not be your stocking where said coal is shoved up, er placed.

Seriously, does coal fired forge impart any qualities to the metal over say a propane kiln type.

From my understanding, using coal or coke for forging can introduce carbon into the iron which changes it from iron into steel. How much carbon is introduced, makes the difference between mild steel, and higher carbon content steel that can be hardened. The amount of carbon is what determines if steel can be hardened or not.

But just using coal to forge with itself doesn't add anything to the steel anymore than using propane.

I also have a start on my propane forge as well. Part of the reason for the coal forge is simplicity. My most expensive item is going to be a cheap hair blow dryer for the air source to the forge. But the way I'm constructing the propane forge, it will be able to handle much larger and longer blades.
