Since I posted that clip from the James Stewart film, "Strategic Air Command" I thought I would post a little history on him. Unlike a lot of Hollyweird actors, Mr. Stewart actually did his part and not just in selling war bonds. He commanded a B-24 squadron and flew twenty combat missions, he suffered PTSD from losing so many of his men. He was a true American hero.

Those played hell with the old vacuum tube televisions.
Screen would fuzz out and the spark plugs firing made a lot of popping noises on the speaker.

While dwarfed by the B36, the B58 Hustler was one exceptional aircraft. My dad flew those, in both operational wings (Pilot at Bunker Hill, and squadron commander at Little Rock). I can remember sitting at the end of the runway at night while they took off with full AB. Beautiful and noisy. Unfortunately, none of my pictures are digital.

Lol, my dad was one of those guys that refused to throw anything away that still worked no matter how old it was. We still had an old wood console RCA tube televeision and he had the whole rubber band thing going with the knobs. My mother finally made him throw it out due to the whole rubber band and tin foil tuning thing.

I have a night takeoff shot, hanging on my wall, signed by his entire squadron in the borders. I have never seen that particular shot on the web, so will have to see about digitizing. Hell, the dang thing is almost 50 years old.
He was a fighter pilot (F86 mostly) but he loved flying the B58.
    Damn.....I am getting old....

We had a static Hustler parked outside our building at tech school (Chanute). Such a cool plane.
