I won't add my two cents since everyone else has more change. The thread should be what's the best gun, best holster and best ammo to take in the best truck to the best hamburger joint. Sorry, I watched The Purge last night and have visions of what that might start.

Oh come on, the penny jar isn't full yet! :)

The simplest answer to this question is, the gun you have available when you need it

In all seriousness, I don't think there is such thing as a "best" overall handgun. It depends on the person who's holding it, and what their needs are. That's why I own several. A couple to carry, some just for fun, and some for home defense. I will say I am partial to DA/SAs though. :D

There are only two kinds of people when this question is asked: those who know and those who pretend not to know.

    The answer is Glock.

Glock not Glock it's fun reading all the different opinions I'm beginning to think I may need more than one handgun.

You guys with a wife/girlfriend/both that carry a S&W .500 mag revolvers in their garter and can shoot their 1911s with accurate delight can flame me but I know I'm right.
Back when she was a competitive shooter, my sis favored a fairly compact pistol...chambered in .30-30 Win. :)

If his sister shot that .30-.30 pistol I did and she was a competitor with it, a wise man would fear. It's fun, but I wouldn't to shoot it all day.

Yeah, it's the same pistol you shot. However, a match was only 40 rounds spaced out over, typically, about 2 hours.

I have to admit, when I shoot 40 rounds from the thing, I get a little "flinchy". She never did. It's a damn shame she can't do it anymore due to health problems. She's not afraid of it but she no longer has the stamina to go 40 rounds.

Once again, after wandering off topic, I feel I really should go back and answer the OP.

I've thought on the "If I could only have one handgun" question often. It always comes down to two choices.
    • A 1911 can be set up to convert to .22LR, 9mm, .45ACP, and .308 Win (and plenty of others, if you like). That would pretty much cover all the bases for me, though I'd need a full-size rifle case to carry all that stuff around and big bucks to acquire such a kit in the first place.
    • My 3" S&W M60 in .38 Special, with it's chunky barrel and adjustable sights, would do 90% of everything I want and 100% of everything I need, would cost far less, and fits in a pocket.
I can't choose between those two alternatives. Thank God I don't have to.

If the OP is truly limiting his choices to the two handguns shown in the video, then I have to wonder if that's going to be the only handgun he'll ever own.
    • If the answer is no, you'll probably get more in the future, then I'd go with the Glock. I'd also immediately start searching for a .22LR conversion kit.
    • If the answer is yes, you'll never own more than one handgun, I'd go with the revolver. It's more of a specialist tool but if it's your only tool then, by definition, you're committed to specializing in the use of that particular tool. Given the availability of plastic bullets and the ability to use wax bullets, you can easily "live-fire" practice in your living room, even if you live in an apartment.

The best handgun for home defense is the one that gets you to your shotgun!
