And the first time it rains, and that smooth surface with all its accumulated oil drips and grime gets wet...I figure things will get exciting real fast.

    Didn't think about that.
I've spun up the back tire on one of my motorcycles before, passing a car and hitting the painted stripe on a road.

It'll be interesting (and unfortunate for those involved) to see how much California's traffic accident rate increases. People are likely going to die because of this little project.

I'd like to say they can't be that stupid ... then again, considering that's it's California.

Since the coating is apparently made to be applied over asphalt, and asphalt is routinely sealed with various types of sealants that don't usually result in traction problems ... maybe they actually did some testing?

The article does mention that the coating passes skid tests and "slip tests for wet traction".

Gonna be a bitch to keep clean, slippery or not ... and the material specs don't mention streets and roadways.

See, that's the thing. It's not intended for streets - so there's no telling what'll happen. I have a feeling the "slip tests" were for traction under shoes, not tires. I think it's for sealing asphalt roofs.

I have to wonder how the lightened streets will affect drivers, seems to me it would not only reflect the heat, but the light also.

Gotta disagree with part of what you say - climate change is a real thing. The earth's climate moves in cycles, it's not a static system like the liberals try to claim, it's in a constant state of change...and we're a few thousand years overdue for an ice age. The bullshit claim is that humans are driving the change. That's rather like saying the fleas on your dog are what makes it hungry...and "combating" climate change is nothing but a political endeavor to promote socialism and whittle away any economic advantages the US and other western nations have. Sadly, there's been a lot of success on that front in Europe.

I have to think that white streets would make it all the more interesting in areas that get snow... And there's plenty of those areas that are full of people just as loonie as Kalifornia...

I've been told by a friend that worked at TxDOT that color can be added to the hot mix asphalt for not much money to make it lighter but not many gov't. agencies want to pay the extra money.

I've been told by a friend that worked at TxDOT that color can be added to the hot mix asphalt for not much money to make it lighter but not many gov't. agencies want to pay the extra money.

Did a quick web search and found a company that does it. Here's a link to their color chart:
    http://www.asphaltcolor.com/wp-cont...sphalt-Color-Chart_NL_9.4.17_Yellow_MP_PR.pdf

Looks like if you add the 100 lbs of their product to a ton of asphalt, you can get a color that is about the same as concrete. That's not going to be "white", but probably what the white paint they are using is going to look like pretty quickly. I was at an airport a few years ago and one of the companies there which catered to more well off aircraft owners actually had a white coated concrete hangar floor. They literally had *red carpets* that went out to the aircraft. Considering how easy it is to get tire marks on a hangar floor just moving aircraft around, I suspect they spent a lot of time cleaning that floor. But, that's the service you get when you are paying that much for fuel. Just checked... They want $6.62 per gallon for 100LL, whereas I can get if for $3.60 just 19nm away. Even for that particular airport, they're nearly $1 more expensive than the other FBOs.

    Probably mostly a symbolic gesture.
Embellishing reflectivity of city surfaces has been considered as a tiny incremental lessening of climate change for a good while now.

No doubt that reflecting our sun's radiant heat back into space cools out planet a bit.
Sort of like when you climb a ladder the earth's rotation slows a bit.
How much cooler or slower the earth is can be calculated but is probably inconsequential.

It's getting foolish to doubt or argue that human activity is causing climate change.
    It is.
The argument is whether or not it matters or whether or not we can or should try to undo it.

BTW I have a favorite symbolic gesture for CA!
