There is a good chance I will be getting a job offer and potentially it will be in Austin (Houston is the other likely location). While I'm waiting to find that out, I wanted to start looking at living there. I've been in the area some but don't know much about the best places to live and such.

Right now we're in a somewhat rural middle class suburb in Fort Bend county and I think we'd probably prefer that as opposed to living in the city.

Which areas/counties are the ones the avoid? My assumption is Travis county would be one.

What about ranges in the area? I prefer shooting outdoor if at all possible.

I'd appreciate any and all advice. :)

I would look South, outside of city limits. Kyle, Buda, etc. Dripping Springs and Wimberly are also nice.

You are going to have a long congested commute anywhere around Austin. I live in Bastrop which is about 30 mi. east of Austin. I commuted up until I retired and the traffic wasn't too bad then but has gotten a whole lot worse since. It is even worse coming south or north or west into the city.

I already live in Houston so I'm well familiar with that half of the equation. My commute to/from downtown takes ~1 hour to 1.5 hours. My preference is to stay here.

Buda & Kyle are both turning into / already are bedroom communities for Austin. Do you have any idea where in town you might wind up working?

From looking at the map, it's the Downtown / Market district area.

You certainly have my sympathy. That gets tough after a while.

Thank you. It certainly is a grind at times. Thankfully podcasts and music not on the radio keep me sane.
