A question out of curiosity, that you may or may not know the answer to. How could he tell by looking that the weapons had been illegally modified?
I believe the weapons were a model that were only manufactured in semi-auto. One person claimed they were SKS models.A question out of curiosity, that you may or may not know the answer to. How could he tell by looking that the weapons had been illegally modified?

Kinda depends on the range. There are two main outdoor ranges in the Midland/Odessa area. I at first was a member of Odessa Outdoors, I liked it because it was closer, but soon found that many people were very rude and at times unsafe. I even had one guy accuse me of shooting after ceasefire, and he was the one that did the shooting. These kind of things makes you want to avoid the ranges, kinda like going to Wal-Mart.
I went to the Odessa “range” twice. The last time I was there, it was just a big pit that the rock crusher left behind when they left. No formal shooting areas, and certainly no safety rules. I was out there when the lady caught a ricochet In her chest. That round was fired from across the “range” and between the other shooters and their targets. I joined MSA the following week and never regretted it.Kinda depends on the range. There are two main outdoor ranges in the Midland/Odessa area. I now belong to Midland Shooter's Association, and I haven't seen any rudeness or accusations from any. Plus, it has more shaded areas.
Small "blasting" bay for shotguns with birdshot, had a group magdump their AK there. Counted 8 spots where some 7.62x39 fell way short, and the backstop to this bay is only like 10 yards out.
Had a guy argue with me that he should be able to do whatever he wants because "it's ok I'm leaving"
Random guy "Are you the RSO?"
Me "Yes sir, what can i hel-"
Random guy "well i am an NRA certified RANGE MASTER so what i say goes"
Me "that's not how this works sir, you have to follow our rules, if you have any concer-"
Random guy "this is unacceptable, the NRA will be hearing about this"
I guess he'll leave out the parts about pointing a gun at me in his report to the NRA
When I worked at Shell, I had a couple of Yankees ask if I thought .375 H&H magnum was a good cartridge for hunting in Texas - they meant white tail deer.Went to gun range in Dallas for my friend's bachelor party. We are all having a good time shooting guns. Turns out in the next lane over there are some guys who clearly are shooting for the first time. They rented two handguns and an AR-15. These people are trying to load the AR and they look like a couple of monkeys doing a math problem. They walk up to me and ask me how to work the AR. I show them how to load the rifle like I am explaining it to a very small child. I then see him try to load 9mm ammo into the magazine of the 45 caliber pistol. I have to point out his mistake to him. At this point I am wondering how stupid are these guys and that they clearly lied about their firearm experience on the range's safety wavier.
Punchline to the whole story is they are not from Texas. They are tourists from New York City.
