Right now they are reporting his highest estimated speed at around 729 mph which will be well short of the sound barrier at any of the atmospheric conditions through which he passed while freefalling (remember the speed of sound is a proven concept but not a constant).

... liked the fact that Kittinger got to keep at least one of his records ...

I have a feeling that Kittinger is the type of guy that would like to see his record broken, especially after holding it all this time.

Edit: Kittinger confirmed my feeling in the press conference. "Records are made to be broken."

I liked his "special one-finger salute" line. Classic!

Watched the while damn checklist on my phone until he stuck his feet out. Then it cut out. I missed the jump. Watched some of the free fall and landing. FML

October 14th is apparently ripe for breaking the sound barrier:

Oct.14, 1947 - Chuck Yeager becomes first man to break the sound barrier in a Bell X-1.

Oct. 14, 2012 - Felix Baumgartner becomes first man to break the sound barrier in free fall.

On a side note, Chuck Yeager didn't want to be outdone, so he had to go up and fly past Mach 1 again today.
