The mosque where the flag (which has no actual
historical significance to Islam) was flown is the equivalent of a chapel on a seminary. Why the mosque is important is because that seminary is where Khameini, the second and current ayatollah of the Islamic Republic if Iran attended.
What it means is the highest religious leaders in Iran have said the Koran supports whatever action the mullahs deem suitable in retaliation for the death of a someone who was anointed as a future mullah.
In essence, it’s kind of like the smoke signal the Vatican puts out when votes are taken for the new Pope.
For that particular sect, Tuesday’s are important as it’s believed that the one thing that differentiates them in a sacred sense supposedly occurred on a Tuesday, about 1600 years ago.

Many here are too young to remember Jimmy Carter and the 1979 islamic uprising. I believe he was a MAJOR contributing factor for the takeover by the islamic faction of the pullback of 'Western-oriented secular modernization' the SHAH was promoting.
The Shah was treated for cancer here in the US against Carter's wishes.
The islamic leaders did not like the Shah (the last Persian monarch) and seized the opportunity becoming an islamic republic.
Basically Carter threw the Shah to the wolves and did nothing to help the Shah or the US Embassy (even his inept rescue mission was flawed). (thank God for Reagan)

Pretty much. Without going in to detail on Eagle Claw, it served as the catalyst for multiple DoD reforms and the creation of SOCOM and JSOC, all of which have been of significant benefit to what most people forget is still the world’s only superpower.

This......any other assertion is complete and utter bullshit. They are not to be feared, only to be used (and sometimes revered) as political pawns. Iran is not even Mexico, but with more chanters and flag burners as long as CNN gives them the airtime.
To be fair, Iran has the capability to conduct combat and paramilitary/guerrilla/terrorist operations against US interests in the region, and in doing so can make our response logistically difficult.
If they choose that route though, they will lose their current victim status on the world stage.
