Taking a couple of steps away from the exposed gasoline nozzle would resolve your fear of the fuel combusting.

Look at the immediate area. Gas nozzle and hose blocking forward movement, as well as altercation. Body of truck on his left. Blocked by open truck door to rear, and blocked by gas pumps on his right. Where are you going to move to to fire off a round? He's in a very boxed arena in this situation.

A little story that has stuck with me since childhood. I was not there, so this is told through the eyes of another. One of my best friends was riding shotgun with another guy I considered a friend, just not as close. Anyway. So the two guys were at a gas station, and see a guy and girl arguing. Heated argument, lots of hand waving and screaming, etc. At some point the guy hauls off and hits the girl in the head, and she stumbles backwards a bit obviously rattled. He then goes inside, leaving the girl outside. So my friend gets out to make sure she's ok, and Greg gets out of the truck and grabs a mini baseball bat he kept behind the seat and goes inside to have a chat. Just as he's getting to the door, guy comes storming out after my friend 'messin with his girl' or some such. Greg gives him one warning, no idea what he said, but the guy turns his attention to Greg and bucks up. *PING !!!!* and he goes down, lights out. Cops show up, bag and tag the guy and that was that.

Actually, we can't know exactly what we'd do if suddenly facing a very unusual situation like that one.

My training says: Look up, hand on gun, look around, seek shelter, warn others, then reevaluate.

Beyond that, we just don't know.

I have stopped several street crimes by firmly saying: "DON'T MAKE ME DRAW MY WEAPON!" No display, no "brandishing", no specific threat, nada mas; but it has worked.

Being old, partly disabled, & using a cane may make me attractive to "muggers".

Texas does have the legal concept of "Prohibited Weapon(s)", which could be just about anything, including a baseball bat. Be very careful with ANY "weapon" !

Gun out before he was that close. Get behind him when he picked her up ad had his hands full. Break his leg as he's walking away. Pour gas on him as he was bent over.
    But not just stand there.
What if I am open carrying, do nothing, he sees my gun and decides he wants it? With my health, or yours, we are at a severe disadvantage. Now the bad guy has a gun....
Nope. An apparent abduction and you are advancing on me, you are likely getting shot unless you turn around.

It’s all fun and games till the kidnap victim turns on you and kills you or calls the cops and gets you into trouble.

We live in freaking bizarro land. Call cops, block their escape route if my family isn’t in the car, but absofresking lutkely avoid getting physical unless you be cones at you or yours.

I'll be the devil's advocate here... presented with the same scenario I probably would have not done anything immediate either. Like everyone else here our basic behavior is to fix things, solve problems and help people suffering... but "this scenario" is not my mandate. I only owe safety to my own family (wife, kids, etc.), no one owes this lady anything.

I would however have called the police, given a good description, and let them deal with it. Women having dramatic arguments/scuffles with other people in parking lots is nothing new, and I am not one of those guys that always step in to help "women in distress" only because she is a woman. Trying to be a knight in shining armor can only cause trouble and one should mind their own business IMO.

Hindsight is 20/20 and she was a victim, but I'm old enough to know that this lady could have been acting hysterical only asking for help to get the guy to drop his guard and potentially mug him with four other guys we didn't see. Not all females today can be trusted.

    Things in order:

    Use your verbal judo.

    1. Shout "Hey you! WTF you doin? What's going on? Knock it off!!"
    2. Shout, "Hey lady, you need help? What's happening???
    3. Shout, "Hey buddy, STOP IT! STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! i'm calling the cops!!"

Then you young studs can do what young studs do.
Us old guys might give him a good caning. But I like distance tools.... like POM pepper spray... the stream goes 25' or more.
I still don't think shooting is a good strategy unless you are going to fire thru the door... heh, heh.

    Two words (w/options):

    Hillary Clinton
    Kamala Harris
    Nancy Pelosi

What should somebody do if in an elevator with 2 bad guys trying to mug you and Nancy Belosi? You have a pen and a snubbie with only 2 bullets left ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Answer: Stab each of the bad guys with the pen and shoot Belosi twice.

You do realize that situation happened longer than a single moment, right? The guy at the pump was not "boxed in" during the entirety of the event, now was he? He wasn't a quadriplegic. Even during the critical several seconds during which the kidnapper was close, are you saying the guy had no ability to do things like move under the gas hose, step back and close his door, or step to the side of the pump? He spent several seconds just simply plastered against his own truck as the kidnapper dragged the young woman out from under it.

Sorry, but this guy was far from out of options, had he chosen to act.

Axxe55, right. A lot of cops have been hurt by the wives/girlfriends in domestic abuse cases when they attempted to intervene against the boyfriend/husband.

My dad told me a story about his rookie year as a cop. Domestic situation at a bar. They intervene and escort the man out of the building. The wife then begins to hammer my dad on his head with her high heel. Turns his attention to her, and places her in the squad car. Turns to see the husband holding a shotgun to his partners head. He had hidden a shotgun in some shrubs outside the bar and was not handcuffed.

Stand off ensues and nobody dies, both go to jail.

EDIT - I have that shotgun. Back then if you took a gun off a perp and they didn't claim it in 30 days you could keep it.
