Both good points. I am pretty good at making fires so that's not really an issue.

Yesterday I finally broke down and ordered an auto drum powder measure. I just can get the pro auto disc to work for 223. Also ordered another bag of wads and a 45 mold. I've got about 1500 45 brass laying around but no bullets. Ordered the lee 6 cavity mold. That thing can really pile them up, quick!

I started on a Lee turret based on advice I got here. I wouldn't have done it any other way. Loading on a single-stage is doable just really slow. With a turret you go slow enough to get a good feel for every step but you still turn out a completed round without too much hassle.

I started on a Lee single stage. I've owned a few different presses now. I still use my Lee single stage.

Personally, if I could do it again and knew what I knew now, I'd say go with a turret. You can get the lee classic turret package and a Frankford tumbler for less.

I also saw the lee value turret kit for $140 on Midway. Add a Frankford tumbler and you can be out the door for under $200 including shipping.

I put this on my wish list

    https://www.cabelas.com/catalog/pro....z_btnclk=YMAN-1883727&WT.z_pg_ref=prd1883727

Hornady LnL Classic kit + Sonic Cleaner. Cabelas ND deal at $299.

Should I keep it on the list for a first press? Plan is to learn on 9mm, then move to .38/.357 and .45ACP.

    What say ye?
It's a good press and decent kit, it'd work great. I wouldn't hesitate about getting a single stage like that at all. I started out on one, and loaded many thousands of rounds. Then got a progressive. The thing is that I tend to set up the progressive and load hundreds of rounds at a time, then it just sits. I load all my rifle rounds and more powerful handgun rounds on the single stage still though. It still gets more of my time in front of it than the progressive.

Get the 4-hole turret. A hole for each die needed.

Last night I loaded up four test rounds for the 458. Staying with the starting powder charge on all of them. Just changing the OAL. Need to get to the range, but have to wait for the Lancer mags to come in. Want to test all the rounds with a mag I know will work.

Hey! - any of you guys who powder coat bullets ever do any for rifle bullets? Would you worry about the coating coming off when you seat them since rifle brass isn't flared like you normally do on pistol rounds?

I had some brass that wasn't quite flared enough but still didn't have any problems with my 9s.

I just bid on a Lee 225 mold though so I'll let you know once I try it.

The reason I ask is because a buddy bought some coated bullets that he was going to use in some 30-30 shells. He was wondering if he needed to get a special die to flare the case a bit, then crimp it down after seating bullets.

I like the Lyman m-die a little more. It makes the bullet start nice and straight.

I flare some of my blackout brass for loading flat base bullets. Lee has a universal flaring die that works great.

The Lee powder through expanding die puts a nice flare on them too. Used that on my 458 rounds.
