What is the most important component to choose first in building my first AR-15?

I'm getting close to ordering components to build an AR-15. What is the most important component to build around? I'm thinking the barrel is item number one. Any opinions? (Loaded question, I know there are going to be a lot of opinions).

if we are going to assume that you are going with a quality metal lower, and not considering polymer, then yes, I agree that the barrel is number one in my book

knowing what you want to do with the gun, how you will use it, what you expect from it, the barrel is a key factor

Length, twist rate, construction are just a few things to consdier
