In the mid 1990's they beefed up the J Model frames and added 357 to the options of cartridges for the Model 60.
My father routinely carries one in 38 spl.
My dad bought this in the late 60s.

I use to carry 357 in my 60 but now that my wrists have arthritis in them. I just load it with 38sIn the mid 1990's they beefed up the J Model frames and added 357 to the options of cartridges for the Model 60.

I doubt anyone you might need to use the pistol on, is going to complain that you didn't use the 357's!I use to carry 357 in my 60 but now that my wrists have arthritis in them. I just load it with 38s
The Model 60 is the stainless steel variant of the Model 36. The Model 36 came out in the late 1950's and the Model 60 followed in the mid 1960's. The Model 60 was also S&W's first all stainless steel pistol. My dad bought this in the late 60s.
Mine is in .38. It has occurred to me many times in the years I've owned it that if I had to make do with just one handgun, it would be a reasonable choice. Love that thing.Smith & wesson model 60 with a 3 inch barrel in 357mag. Been carrying it for about 15 years now.
They are just fun to shoot with plinking loads too.Mine is in .38. It has occurred to me many times in the years I've owned it that if I had to make do with just one handgun, it would be a reasonable choice. Love that thing.
Nothing wrong with using any reason to buy a new gun.If a H&K USPC was dinging into your side you needed a new holster, not a new pistol.
Ha.
But it is, evidently the earlier ones were .38.
That is what is marked on the barrel.
.38 S&W SpecialIs it ".38" or is something else there, like .38LC, .38S&W, or .38SPL ?
I had an old police revolver marked ".38LC" and was told to not fire it with anything but .38 Long Colt ammo.
I had fired it long ago & it functioned well, but it was one of those with the one-piece hammer/firing pin, so to carry it, was always one empty chamber in its cylinder under the hammer. (No drop-safety)
It was from a Grandfather & is now a wall-hanger at my older Son's.

Put a Shield Arms metal mag with that 43X and have 15+1 rounds. View attachment 326819I used to carry my Glock foootay "Problem Solver" (Glock 27 Gen 3), but I wanted more capacity and went to a Glock 43x.
