Wife came home & texted me there was a snake caught in the garage door.

No rattle. Not a viper head or eyes.

Looks to me like a non-venomous rat snake aka water snake. FYI if the pupils are round it’s not venomous. Not to say a bite wouldn’t send you to the hospital still

I let him go. Seemed ok. I thought he was a rattler based on the diamond patterns until I got closer & saw no rattles & round pupils.

Was it striking at you and opening its mouth a lot?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but usually rattle snakes have more scaly skin. IE: it looks more rough and armored compared to a rat snakes slick skin

Heard a loud noise from the throne room yesterday. My wife informed me a mouse exited the closet and escaped into the bedroom, therefore noise. Tonite she went into the bedroom and this time I heard a scream, SNAKE. A short search turned up a small (12") chicken snake hiding behind the door. She pinned him with a piece of cardboard and I picked him up and escorted him out to the pasture. Told him don't do that again. She wanted to know what he was doing there and I told her he was following the mouse trail. I don't think she bought it as she asked what he was going to do if he found the mouse.

Fun and games in the country. He was feisty though and didn't appreciate my grip on his neck???

There’s was one time I was out in the country and I had shot a bird with my .22 earlier that day but never recovered it in the tall grass close to the house. Later that day I was walking in the backyard and heard dry leaves rustling and I looked around and found a big 5’ snake coiled up staring at me. I had said .22 with me and popped him. He had a large stomach so I cut it open to find, get this, the bird I had shot earlier.
held the tail at shoulder height and head touched the ground

When I came outside I went in the garage first & heard what I thought was the snake rattling. I went from thinking my wife was overreacting to, "Sh-- just got real!" in no time. I thought I had a shovel in the garage but they were all down in the barn. So, I go out to face a possible rattler with a dang push broom.

Thankfully it was just this guy.

I read they are really good climbers. He must have climbed up the door track & hidden on the door until I started lowering it. He was about 5' up in those pictures.
