Where have all the cicadas gone?

Since I was a little kid, a part of summer was those green and white cicada's songs all day long.

I can't remember hearing them this summer or last. I just came in, and there is a cicada that sings in the last hour of daylight , that I just heard .

Don't remember seeing all those dried up shed exoskeletons that used to be everywhere either.

Anyone else experience this or have an explanation ?

No idea. They've been singing here strong. Hotter it is the better the song. They're all over place.

We've still got them this year. Not as dense as some years, but the grasshoppers have been light too. I think the drought plays into this.

When the drought breaks (hopefully next year), I look for the populations of both to explode again.

Yeah, those are all the orange ones though . I think that's what I am hearing at sunset. The ones I am talking about have snow white bellies .

Do you hear them in the middle of the day? They are city dwellers more than boonies , never saw very many at the ranch, while the city was thick with them.

A little quick research shows that what I am talking about is an annual cicada with a 2-5 year lifespan, not the 17 year variety. It's a tibicen superbus, commonly known as a dog day cicada .

Whatever it takes for those noisy bastards! There's nothing like the sound of them hollering when a bird plucks them up.

(That was in jest, they sound like summer to me.)

There's no mistaking the buzz they make. I can hear them, and without looking, know a bird has one.

Only the males make sound, the females are mutes. Absolute proof that God is not perfect , ( He picked that species to bestow that traight on, when humans were right here!!!!)

Plus the largest batch of cicada killers I have ever had. Usually just a couple. This spring must have had two dozen of the critters swarming around.
