Howdy!
The last Belgian I spoke with had nothing but an extreme hatred of the United States.
Accused us of the Genocide of Native Americans, said we could have starved Japan instead of dropping the Atomic Bombs on them, derided us for our military campaigns in Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Iraq.
Said our American Beer tasted like piss.
I shall not visit the sins of your brother onto you.
You are still welcome here.
Be well!

I have never drank piss, so I could not make that comparison if i had to.

People are essentially lazy and rarely able to distinguish fact form propaganda.
.....
I am truly embarrassed by the conduct of that person. That's one of the drawbacks of democracy, any fool can blurt out anything they want.
Everybody who has the slightest knowledge of history knows the US saved us from the Germans (twice) and kept the Russians out of the door.
If you know that at some point, 16 million men and women were serving as US personnel in the second world war, I can only say: thank you! And I mean it.
As with everything, we are subjected to what the media tells us. People are essentially lazy and rarely able to distinguish fact form propaganda.
It's very easy to criticize the US for intervening somewhere when our own government lacks the balls to do anything but call each other names. Let's face it, we Belgians (and Europeans in general) are cowards. I wish it weren't so.
Starving Japan, sheez. As if that wouldn't have cost millions of lives. The atomic bombs were necessary. It's really sad for the innocent Japanese people who perished, but you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. I've read a lot about Japanese culture during the Showa era and they were not going to give up. Besides, the USSR was more than willing to invade the rest of western Europe. Hte show of force of the US military was needed, and as a result of the MAD doctrine, brought us peace and prosperity by keeping the world powers in balance.
So please take it from me. Take it from someone who saw the gas chambers in Auschwitz, who had the honor to be guided in Fort Breendonk by a former inmate who had been tortured there for two years, take it form a descendant of a family that lost half of it's members in WW2 at the hands of the nazis: you did good, and I will never disavow the sacrifice you made for us.
One of my coworkers in Dallas has a 23 year old serving in the army. He was deployed to Iraq in 2010 and 2011. I could see the anguish she felt every day, hoping her son would come back in one piece. But that's a story you'll never find in the media here.
So I apologize for my fellow Belgian, but please know that not everybody thinks like that over here.
And to be honest: yes American beer is piss. But Dutch beer is worse. :-)
Your steaks are out of this world, however. I gain 5 pounds every time I visit.
Howdy!

Bievenue, Mon Ami,
We spent September before last en Antewerpen & were amazed by the numbers and rudeness of Belgium's muslims.
Please tell us about how so many muslims ended-up in Belgium and what it means to Belgians.
leVieux
Well, it's a problem. Both a historical as a sociological problem. Historical because, let's face it, the culture they imported is at leasr a millenium behind ours. Islam in it's actual form does not fit the Western world.
Originally, North Africans, Italians and Greeks were asked to come to Belgium. In the golden sixties we were in desperate shortage of manpower. After the oil crisis of the 70's, the manpower wasn't needed anymore, but the Africans kept coming.
We've had a string of socialist governments, who welcomed the influx of poor sods, free electorate, you know...
The sociological factor is why the Muslim community in Belgium will never thrive. Because of their backwards ideas, they istracize themselves. Girls are just taking the legal minimum of schooling and are directed towards being stay-at-home woman from birth. Because they refuse using contraception, birthrates are high, and because they lack proper schooling, most of those families live well below the poverty line. Boys are mostly left to do whatever they want. Mothers have nothing to say because they are women and men are not interested in raising their family. They prefer to spend thr day in the many tea houses doing nothing.
Unemployment among Muslims in Belgium is sky high.
So yeah. Islam is the root and cause of the problems. Italians and Greeks assimilated just fine, keeping their cultiral ancestry but adapting to the modern way. It's the same with Asians, chassidim Jews, ... But not for Muslims and black Africans. I wonder why.
