My daughter has chickens. She is a super cute girly girl, and we were all shocked she became a chicken farmer. She names all her chickens, and cried when "Elvis" got eaten by a coyote/bobcat (they have both).

They live in the boonies and have had a bunch of chickens go missing. They let them roam about during the daylight, but the coop is behind the shop building and out of sight.

Kill the extra rooster and have a nice roasted chicken dinner too.
Some people think you have to have a rooster for chickens to lay. Those people are wrong.
We have chickens and ducks. No roosters. No drakes. Just laying hens and ducks.
    I likes my duck eggs!

As for the cost, it all plays out in time.
We produce more eggs than we can consume. We give some away to friends, but we also sell them to others.
