My guess would be this is the part that kept him from getting the LTC.

Carrier doesn't own the cell phone so they can't grant access. I assume you're meaning the call records? We've got decades of history on wire taps and call records, so I doubt call history is the issue. Perhaps cloud type backup of the actual data is in question?.

Needs a conviction first though, right?

With the court order, this is where it gets interesting. How far should they be allowed to go? Require a backdoor in all cell phones, or just access to what may be stored in carrier files and logs?

Does any backdoor apply only to heinous felonies, or any and all crimes like texting while driving or walking on a sidewalk?

Just speculation on my part, but I bet they do. The same way all those internet sites can give you a "forgot your password" link.

It is a fascinating topic, but I'm afraid it boils down to, give them an inch and they'll take a mile. George Orwell was on to something.

Hopefully he comes back with a more polite tone. Opposing viewpoints are a great way to encourage the discussion.

Which is a good policy. Too bad it's easy to forget that hiding behind a keyboard sometimes.

    F350-6,

    1. YEP. I mean the call records that the carrier has access to.
    2. NOPE. The case that was decided by the SCOTUS was about the investigation before the case went to trial.
    3. Inasmuch as APPLE has agree to open the cellphone to the DPS, I suspect that all of the manufacturers could do the same with/without a court order.
    4. With a court order, obviously the SCOTUS decision requires the maker of the phone to comply.
    5. ImVho, I was NEITHER impolite NOR insulting UNLESS simply disagreeing with other members is insulting/impolite.
(I know that some members here believe sincerely that their OPINION is the SOLE valid opinion/point off view. - SOME have complained to "management" about such differing points of view.)

To All: I didn't need to "chill out", as I wasn't angry or upset by anything that any other member posted. - Otoh, I find it both SILLY & CHILDISH to "run to tattle" because your feelings are hurt. = I had NO idea that we evidently have some "snowflakes" on forum.
IF simply disagreeing with others is "impolite" or "insulting", I'll be banned again, as I simply won't fail to say what I think.
(FREEDOM OF SPEECH is NOT intended to protect "popular speech"; instead the Founding Fathers intended to protect "unpopular speech" & even very disagreeable, raucous and "hate speech". = This forum is large enough to be a "public accommodation" where free speech is allowed/required under FCC regulations.)
In the event that the moderators decide to ban me again, I would appreciate the simple courtesy of having time to gather the emails of friends on the forum before I leave PERMANENTLY.
(I argued with myself most of last evening about whether I would ever post to this forum again OR simply resign form membership, as I despise censorship.)

You weren't directly insulting, but you did specifically insinuate labels like moron and fool towards at least one member. (my memory isn't good enough to recall if it was more than one, and I'm too lazy to go back and look)

I wasn't particularly offended by what you said, but will admit if you didn't cross the line, you went right up to it and danced on it. As I mentioned, I did hope you come back because discussions like these really do work better when folks have different viewpoints, and I have enjoyed reading your opinions so far.

But as you pointed out, when one results to name calling or labeling, then it's often a sign that the logical argument has left. You used labels just like the ones you accused of using labels if we want to take an honest look at it.

Ol’ Saxt likes to call people snowflakes, leftists, and other bullshit when he is too dense to comprehend the other side of the discussion.

And if that isn’t enough for me to hope he takes his ball and goes home, he CAPITALIZES every OTHER word, GD that GETS old QUICK.

    Bye.

    JonFrankMc,

Frankly, I couldn't care less whether you like my admittedly eccentric typing style or not. - IF it really bothers you, I recommend that you just "scroll on by",
(My feelings won't be hurt by your not reading my posts & won't miss your opinions thereupon, either.)

So shortcut your inane accusatory queries, I am not a conspiracy theorist. I do understand what it means to have a business. DPS can get a warrant. It should be no problem.

    Double Naught Spy,

Fwiw, the carrier told the DPS, according to our local all news cable channel 14, that they would NOT comply with a TX court order & would sue in federal courts to protect the "privacy of our client". - Thus my post is far from "inane" or a conspiracy theory.
BTW, APPLE complied with the DPS request & opened the cellphone, without complaint, as their management understands that dead people (especially mass murderers) have no rights to privacy or anything else.

    Bye

    Shady,

Thanks for your generally worthless comment. (If you want to see what "impolite" looks like, go look in any convenient mirror.)
I have a considerable number of friends on this website, who would miss my comments.
(I got several emails from some of them that said that my "banning" was unjust, needless & silly.)

Apple isn’t saying here that it’s willing to help the FBI bypass the access code on Kelley’s iPhone, something the company has said it will never do and is willing to go to court to fight. However, Apple could have provided other forms of assistance like suggesting they use Kelley’s fingerprint or, as its statement reads, expedite legal warrant requests to get into Kelley’s iCloud account to check for iPhone backups

    F350-6,

What I intensely dislike is people (like some here) who believe that their viewpoint is the only valid opinion & therefore do their best to stop anyone else from expressing their opinion.
(One of those "tactics" is to "run to tattle to Mommy" every time that they are disagreed with or it is pointed out that they are factually wrong & posting nonsense, that is not in consonance with generally recognized facts.)

    SATX,

Nobody "tattled" to anyone. Not one post was reported and not one PM was sent.

I chose to take action due to your inability to make an argument without insulting those you disagree with. Even now you are casting insults blindly at the general membership claiming they "tattled to mommy" which is 100% untrue.

I suggest the subject be dropped and then near constant insults be left out of future discourse.
