View attachment 174219 ....... Pretty cactus (idk name) with Mitre Peak in the background there at the center. I found the hiking trail challenging for me, yet very enjoyable. We hiked two hours including rests. We will hike above Fort Davis National Park tomorrow, after swimming at Balmorhea State Park in the am.

Cholla Cactus. They’re beautiful when in flower.

That tode looks like he’s full and gettin ready to hit the sack :)

I was in Andrews last year, I’ve never seen so many Herny todes running around. They were everywhere.

When I was a kid they were everywhere on my grandparents farm in Lancaster just South of Dallas. Damn shame they disappeared.

When we lived in Brownfield back in the day we used to put a string on them and let Roy and Dale, from the Post Toasties box, "ride the range" on them.

Another thing I haven't seen in years in the Houston area is fireflies.
Here in rural Arkansas they are now out every night by the lake.
Brings back memories just seeing them.

It's not very pretty when you are a teen climbing into a tree to deer hunt and fall butt first into one of them. The morning was spent picking thorns.
Ouch! Bet that taught your ass to climb better next time. XD

My fat ass got stuck trying to naviagate across a rock wall sheared up to a small stream in the cdri canyon yesterday and I figured out how back myself back out real quick because it wasn’t gonna end well.

Texas is a beautiful state. Show me your beautiful photos of Texas.

Here's a shot from tonight. Sunset at the mouth of the Brazos River, I'm standing on the Gulf shore.

    Taken with husband's IPhone.

    Enjoy.

    What else y'all got?

I know this is old, and not sure how I missed this. But this is one of my favorite spots to fish. Was fishing up the river a couple hundred yards, and a guy next to me gets his R&R pulled into the river. it bobbed a little, then went under headed out to sea. About two hours later, here it came again.

I threw my cast net on it, and caught it. The guys jumped in to get the fish (and the rod) and it was a 5' shark.

Another time I drove over the dune to get to the mouth in the dark, and it was high tide. I drove into the water and freaked out. Just slow rolled with a shallow turn and kept moving until I got back to the dune to get out of there. Thank God I had it in 4wd when I went in.

Will for sure look that up. May not happen this trip but for sure we will be back this way soon. I honestly feel a bit ignorant/cheated that I have lived in Texas my whole life and this beautiful part of the state was just a day’s drive away and I never visited here before now.
If you've got some time look up Red Rock Ranch Tours in Van Horn. I guarantee you won't be disapointed.
