    To All,

To paraphrase my Dad about "hunting ducks": I never LOST a carbine, so I don't have to go hunt any.

An M1 carbine will do NOTHING that a Remington 7615 or an M4 won't do & the 5.56mm NATO is a BETTER round, too.

    yours, satx

Not sure what your point is. Every firearm and caliber has its own place. BETTER is subjective. My wife's stock Fusion Sport will blow the doors off a '69 Camaro SS but I don't go around telling classic car guys that they own a pile of shit.

What, you never heard of the 82nd Airborne jumping into Salerno with Remington 7615s strapped to them?

    SQLgeek,

Even in WWII, there were FAR more effective weapons available than the M1 or M2 carbine ever were, so what is your point??

Also even the most severe of possible MILITIA SERVICE in CONUS in 2020 is NOT Operation Avalanche on 09SEP43. = I would suggest that my lady's Model 7615 with 20/30 round magazines of 5.56mm JHP is VERY SUITABLE as her MILITIA WEAPON, as she shoots it WELL, out well past 150M.
(Put our home & hearth & in particular Nathan Paul in eminent danger & she will do her best to KILL YOU. NOT a doubt in my mind about that.= The FEMALE of most every species, defending her young, is FAR MORE fierce & dangerous to predators than the male.)

    so what is your point??

That the historical reason is why I'm interested in an M1 Carbine. The same reason I am interested in surplus military rifles in general. I'm not looking for the next Electric Boogaloo rifle, there are others in my collection for that.

I'm not sure what your point is for posting such in this thread.

I was thinking of getting a carbine when I got my Garand from CMP years ago as well. My buddy kept telling me to get both at the same time, but I held off on the carbine.

    claymore 504,

I had the same chance in 2001 & bought a PAIR of Garand rifles at the "North Store". = an EARLY 1943 by SA & a 1956 made by IH.

All of our members are welcome to all of the .30 carbines, as I'm NOT impressed.
(Otoh, I have considered building myself a Johnson carbine, with folding stock for use in Latin America as the little Johnson is both effective & very compact.)
Note: A Johnson carbine in ANY caliber is LEGAL in most every country that PROHIBITS civilians from possessing/shooting a "weapon of war" & is "quite suitable" to take 2 or 4 footed creatures to about 200# out well past 100M, in the hands of a good shot.

I always wanted one just for the hell of it. I knew a guy who had one and he loved the damn thing. I saw the other day they were mostly sold out the places I checked. I was looking at the new reproductions, not the vintage ones.
I just searched and found this one if you like

here is the search engine, it shows more

Thanks for that. I think I already have gun.deals permanently etched in my browser history from going there so often.

I had looked at both the Inland and Auto Ordnance commercial rifles but there are too many iffy reviews for me to consider them. I'd rather pay a little more for USGI unless they're unobtanium.

    To All,

My dear friend, NAA'TEH, Principal Chief of the White Mountain Apache Nation & who holds EVERY US decoration for bravery except the MOH for his service as an NCO in the 173d ABN RGT during The Korean War (Naa'Teh also was decorated for bravery by Greece, Turkey, the UK, France, Canada & 2-4 other allied nations) told me in 2009 that, "I threw away my M1 carbine after our first defensive action against the CHICOMs & picked-up a Garand from a dead GI. (pause) I regard the .30 caliber carbine as NEARLY WORTHLESS beyond 50 yards as defensive weapon."

Here's one for y'all, you can only choose one.
    1) M1 or 2 carbine
    2) Thompson SMG
    3) M3 Grease gun

    baboon,

WHY are you limiting responses to those firearms??

NO question in my mind, if I didn't have to carry one all day on long marches, I'd choose an M1A1 TSMG. of those few firearms.
(IF you've never "toted one", the old Tommy Gun is a HEAVY sucker. - When we worked for the OAS "way down yonder" in '92-'93, we has 4-5 of them in the arms room. EVERYBODY wanted to SHOOT the TSMG on the range but nobody wanted to be issued one to carry "in the bush".= CHUCKLE)

ADDENDA: One of the TSMG in the arms room was a 1928 "Navy Over-stamp" in NRA FINE or better condition, with several 50-round drums.. - EVERYBODY wanted that one to take home FOREVER.
(I'd be afraid to guess what that one, IF it was legal to import into the USA, might bring at auction.)

Your opinion on the M1 Carbine is noted.

Well this thread started about carbines & I feel carbine is somewhat like a SMG.

    baboon,

Well, the M2 carbine is sort of like a SMG, though it "gets hotter than a 2-dollar pistol" quickly on FA.
(Fwiw, I know for a fact that SOME CMP M1 carbines were ordered & arrived in the mail that had all of the M2 parts installed. When that was discovered, I suspect that there a lot of RED FACES at HQ, CMP.)

When I "had money", I was foolish enough to NOT pay several 200.oo taxes & convert a number of M1 carbines to M2. = While I made considerable profit on the Model 37 Ithaca riot-guns that I bought (from an out of Texas Corrections Department) & later resold, I made nothing like what a registered M2 were worth soon after they were illegal,
(Back then, M2 "parts sets" were all over the gun shows & CHEAP too, as hardly anyone wanted to pay the 200.oo tax.)
