I am absolutely appalled by this community right now. Not a single 10mm recommendation? Girly girl wants power!

    Kidding of course.

If you are ever in the Austin area I have a quite a few of the recommended handguns. P365XL, G43x,19,20,23,27,29 a few XDs, a few Sigs and several 1911s in multiple calibers including 10mm if you're feeling frisky.

    What about post 19?

thank you for that! i was actually going to offer if someone would be willing to meet me at a local range and had a few they would be willing to let me touch and/or try, i would be happy to take them for a beer/cocktails/wine after but i was not sure if i was allowed to say that.
TROLL, action, bite, hook em, reel em in! And if it's real and not what I just said, then:

Damn  what am I saying? That was all in good natured jest, I think .

Seriously, do you need help, well if you(or anyone) are ever near Texarkana (I know it's far from your location), look me up and I will help you out with shooting & picking a gun. That goes even if you look like Attila The Hun and not your Avatar. I recommend from 380 up 45 to a start (avoid 40 S&W) but also recommend starting on a 22 if possible. Then again, if you already shoot, skip the 22.

I have been shooting since I've been about 9 or 10 and have been a certified NRA LE Firearms Instructor for around 25 years, and an Advanced Glock Armorer and a gun nut in general. Happy to help out any new shooter - no booze required nor wanted when in possession of firearms.

I carry a 9mm Shield myself. I have shot a P365 and like it quite a bit. I prefer the Shield in 9mm for its capacity compared to its size.

I'm not opposed to carrying a .45 if that's what you want. A .45 Shield, M&P Compact and Glock 30 or 36 are all options I think as well. But you will need to try some to see what you like.

And Moon is a good guy but he has a weird fascination with 1911s.

First of all, I would give the same advice to any new shooter, regardless of whether they were a male or a female. I would never suggest a particular brand, caliber or size of pistol for carrying. It's irrelevant IMO. Everyone is different, has different needs, and are willing to make certain compromises to meet their own specific needs.

I have no idea as to your skill levels with firearms, so trying to make a suggestion as to what caliber you are capable with would be foolish on my part. Your physical stature is very subjective, and much can come back to your skill level with firearms, and your length of experience shooting various types of guns. My two nieces are 19 and 17, and both weigh not much over 100 lbs. soaking wet, but they have been shooting for a number of years now, and are able to handle pretty much anything, and accurately as well.

My best advice, is to try out as many pistols as you can. In these times, that might be quite difficult though. I would make the same suggestion to a man as well. If afforded to the opportunity, shot as many different pistols as possible. Every one of them is going to be different. Even if they are in the same caliber. A large frame pistol in 9mm acts much differently in a sub-compact in 9mm. Recoil is a huge issue. Finding a pistol that fits you, and that you can control the recoil, will allow you to be a much more accurate shooter. I am one of those who preaches accurate shot placement over size of caliber every day of the week. Size doesn't matter unless you can hit the intended target. Hits with a 22, beat misses with a 44 any day of the week.

I wish you much luck in your search.

Don’t get so hung up on caliber. They are all virtually equal in terminal results. In a small gun 45ACP is more of a handicap due to limited round capacity.

A Sig P365 or Glock 43x or maybe even a Springfield Hell Cat (barf) equals compact size with plenty of mag capacity.

Stuff it full of 124 grain Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger T Ammo and you will be good to go.

love the commander size 1911 suggestions! my friend whom i have gone shooting with quite a bit and knows my shooting style (strengths and weaknesses) said he thinks i will really like the 1911 .45 acp
I really like a commander 1911. I have a STI Ranger ii in 9mm. It's one of the sweetest shooting pistols I've ever shot. But I carry a sig p365. The difference is more rds, more compact and half the weight of the 1911. If you have to have 45 then go for it. But in my humble opinion if 10-20 rounds of 147gr 9mm in HST, Gold dot G2, Winchester Ranger etc doesn't get the job done then you needed more than a pistol to get you out of the mess you're in anyway.

... but, on the other hand, don't get too hung up on magazine capacity. Remember the law of 3; armed altercations predominately happen at 3 yards distance, last only 3 seconds, and fire only 3 rounds... So go for the 45acp... even if it only holds 6 rounds, with a 45acp you only need one round

If you can make it to a TGT Reunion possibly in Oct. I'm sure there will be a ton of handguns to try out.

i saw that on the board somewhere and i am really hoping that this stupid c-virus is contained by then and get togethers are happening again...i will definitely be there if it is on!

Are you willing to clean the guns you shoot too?

actually, yep...love cleaning my guns and do it after every time i shoot...if someone wants to trust me to clean theirs, i would do it :D

lol, i take everything in good-natured fun....you know, assume positive intent and all...i changed my avatar pic from one of my furbabies to this one only because i got the sense people did not believe i was actually (1) not a troll and (2) an actual female  probably silly on my part, guess i just wanted to show people i was real...anyhoooo, i am really comfortable (and pretty good) with 22, .380 and 9mm...really comfortable and consistently hit the target (i concentrate on 15 yrs and closer) and have been shooting for about 12 years...i used to shoot my friend's springfield xd .40 pretty regularly and handled that just fine so was thinking a .45 was not out of the question....i appreciate the offer to help if i am ever out your way :)

This is exactly why I stress and preach accurate shot placement. Size of caliber and number of capacity are meaningless unless you can hit your intended target. Time spent at the range putting rounds downrange will pay huge dividends at some point if you ever need to be an accurate shooter.

My attitude about capacity is better to have it and not need it. Of course I also used to carry a Glock 19 with a 17 round mag as a reload. I've backed off of that down to the 8+1 in the Shield plus another 8 round reload.

Everyone's risk tolerance is different. Some folks want 20+1 and carry that. Others are good with a 5 shot J frame with no reload. I don't think there's a wrong answer.

I look at that as a personal preference that each individual needs to take into consideration. My carry choices are way different now than in the past when I lived in larger cities. I also don't carry as much on my person unless I'm going to town either. But, I do have one at very close reach at all times!

Also remember, the more guns you have, in different calibers, means more types of ammo you will have to feed them and to keep on hand. And unless you have a very deep purse, that can get very expensive, very quickly, especially in these times with limited amounts of ammo being available. This is why it might be much more practical for some people to just have several pistols that all use the same type of ammo. That way you don't have to worry about multiple calibers for your guns.
