When I was a kid, my brother and I were the free help. We had chores, we cut the grass every week on 1.3 acre lot, my brothers and I helped dad reroof the house one summer, and we also had to paint rental houses every time a tenant moved out. I think it taught us responsibility and to a larger extent we became more self sufficient In life because of it. Our parents bought us older used cars in high school but we worked part time jobs for insurance, maintenance, and gas money. If the car broke, it was on us to learn how to fix it. Dad would offer guidance but he sure as heck wouldn’t be turning the wrenches. That was on us to learn how to do. I look at the families in my neighborhood, and the kids are nowhere to be seen. Yard crews are cutting the grass and some of the kids have newer and nicer vehicles than I do. I remember Dad making me pick my own switch if I got severely out of line. Today, free range kids or spankings will get you a court date. Times have sure changed

I was a troubled youth. Lost both of my parents as a teen. I kept a cool head while they were around, but when they were gone I was on a downward spiral. Spending 2 weeks in Bexar County jail made me wise up. A few weeks after I got out I was on my way to BCT. That helped.

That’s what happens when your dad strikes no fear in your heart. My dad voice alone settles my kids. We all have it and when you discover it the sky’s the limit lol. Shoot the sheer disappointment in my dads voice when I did wrong was enough to make me stop acting a fool sometimes.
