Got my first snubbie today a Taurus 856. I wanted something cheap to see if I like it before getting a nice ruger or s&w. 150rds thru it today I like it but have some serious pratice to do before it’s carried.

Having owned several of both, I find that Taurus quality is better than Ruger, when it comes to handguns. Ruger makes great long guns.

I’m not brand loyal but I like the platform for what it’s intended for plus I’m getting older an lazy so I’m simplifying life.

    Understood.

    Approaching 80th B-D, here.

Yes, for new defensive gun owners, my #1 recommendation is S&W .38Spl J-frame.

In my limited experiences, the mere presence of a defensive firearm stops many incipient crimes of violence.

    Gunz are icky.
Snubbies can be a handful. They have a tendency to hit low.
I believe this is due to when pulling in the trigger on double action the barrel tips down just as the break happens. The very short sight radius means the tiniest movement makes for a great angle off line of sight. The small grips they typically have lets the gun move/roll in your hand. Not much but enough.
They take a lot of practice to master at distances farther than beer belly.
Then again they’re not exactly 50yd Bullseye guns now are they.
    I like them. Have several.

J-frames aren’t “range guns”, except for basic learning & practice.
    Yes but there are exceptions.

An all-steel, 3" .38 can be a very, very fun range toy. I love mine. S&W has occasionally made .22 Kit Guns with 5" barrels; I 'd like to own one so that I can discover for myself if it's as much a fun range toy as I suspect.

Oh I found that out yesterday after 150 rds of just range ammo my wrist are a little sore.
I plan on at least 100rds a month till I’m confident, at 7 yards my groups were about beach ball sized all DA.

If you can locate different bullet weight ammo, try as many different ones as possible.
One .38 snub I have hates anything other than 110 grain loads. Another just like it likes 158’s.

Try pulling the trigger just enough to rotate the cylinder, stop, aim and apply another 2lbs and it should almost be like a single action at that point. I have a hammer less 642 airweight that can hit from 100 yards out with practice.

    My 2-cents:
These light snubbies are no fun with magnum rounds.
My K6s is a 357, and it didn’t take very long to realize how painful shooting 357 is - my ego wouldn’t let me stop until I shot all 6, but I paid for it for days afterward. It’s only good for shooting 38s. I wouldn’t even carry it loaded with 357.
