Wtf? Since I've booked my ticket every day I read about a derailment. I heard the US has had 3 derailments a day for a long time. I know it's one of the news de jure.

Take a roll of TP. You should also have a small first aid kit with aspirin, tylenol or the like. The ride from Austin to Dallas and OKC is slow so I also had on hand, pillow, towel, ear plugs. Keep your valuables on you (belly or fanny pack works).

I've looong wanted to ride a train, somewhere / anywhere. Hope all goes well.

If you just want a pleasant couple of hours on a train, the little railroad at Palestine Rusk State Park is well worth the drive. It's all passenger cars pulled by an old steam locomotive (which was used in the opening scenes of "O Brother Where Art Thou") traveling a winding route through the Piney Woods.

A friend of mines family farm surrounds the Palestine station. If you really like to hear a rant get him going about The Polar Express messing with his hunting. IIRC 35 different productions have filmed there.

From what I understand, O Brother actually filmed in Mississippi - they had to move the train engine out to where it was being filmed which took a lot of logistical wrangling so it wouldn't interfere with the usual freight trains between Palestine and the filming location.

I once took a train when I was very young from Albuquerque to Kansas City.
I still vividly remember the experience.

    COINCIDENTALLY

Being that last week was our Spring Break, I took my family to the Grand Canyon.
I booked 4 tickets on the Williams Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to the South Rim.

It is still a working rail line, it is a 2.5-hour ride from the town of Williams, Arizona up north through the wilderness and snowy mountains. It was great. What gets me was that for all 4 of us, it was a fraction of the cost to travel in first class ($750).

While Amtrack is great, it is much more expensive than flying Southwest and unfortunately much longer...
We were able to get the train experience, see the Grand Canyon and not break the bank.

Heading back to visit family in upstate NY in June. Thought why not see some of the country side. Should be an interesting journey, sleeping two nights on the train. Any tips from anyone who has traveled by Amtrak? I've watched some YouTube videos people made while traveling.
Nice! I rode from Houston to San Antonio last year, pleasant experience - but, as expected, ran late.

Average is 3 derailments daily in America, a LOT of freight gets moved here and the safety record is actually stellar.

They use Diesels most of the time, too expensive to run steam.

That's a pity. When I rode (granted it was about 15 years ago) they were using the steam engine.
That may have been when it was a money-hemorrhaging state park, it's been operated under contract by private for-profit companies in recent years that have made efforts to improve efficiency and actually turn a profit.
