So by saying a ">$400 budget, you're saying you're looking for something pricier than $400 yet the sky being the limit, or are you completely misunderstood about the difference between the "less than" and "greater than" relational operators?
In short, are you trying to say "LESS THAN $400" or "GREATER THAN $400"? Contextually it seems you want the former, but you twice indicated the latter...
My bad, didn't realize the mistake. LESS THAN!!!! (brain fart).

If you could squeeze another Franklin out of your wallet, you could get a NIB combo package. Something with a barrel for birds, clays, etc. and a rifled slug barrel for deer and home defense. The extra 2 inches and rifling should not be detrimental to it's performance for distances you would be defending your family inside your home or yard.
Specifically talking about the Remington Model 870 Express Deer Shotgun Combo, which can be had for $500.

Is that the one I was looking at when we were at collector's? What is that barrel length?
Haha yeah I saw that on their website not long after you mentioned that shotgun.
Hate to hijack but do you know if a +2 mag extension sits flush with the 18", 18.5", or 20" barrel? And is the barrel the sole determinant of what length shells you can fire through a shotgun or is there something else, like the receiver?
Yes ....................& ...................No, .. No
