I think he was referring to Hassan, a Major. Being an officer does not make a person less likely to shoot.

    Officers?

To hell with letting officers carry. A good portion of them cant even qualify with a pistol. Ive seem them take pens and poke holes in targets.

I would say SSG and above. But for as much as some of us have been deployed, blown up, etc thats not strict enough obviously.

So far, all the soldiers I know at Ft Hood, of any rank, that qualified with a handgun, are pretty damn good at it. The ones that aint, will tell you they suck at it. Last thing they want is in a battle zone with a weapon they cant shoot.

I figure if our soldiers can pass the same CHL qual that bill from town can pass, then let them carry on base. I don't care what their rank is.

Regarding officers or senior NCOs only being allowed to carry...that would be a start. The military by design is not egalitarian so this would be consistent with other rank/class divisions on base.

The MP station is less than a 5 minute drive from where the shooting occurred. That's doing the speed limit of 30 mph.

My two cents...as a retired First Sergeant:

Letting everyone carry weapons on post would be a logistical nightmare - in a combat zone there fewer distractions - in garrison it would be a nightmare. Believe it or not, I had a couple of officers/Soldiers who had to be supervised while around weapons, and even knew Soldiers in Iraq that weren't allowed off the FOB. I even removed the firing pin of a dude's M4 in Kuwait when he had a meltdown after someone started a rumor that we would be convoying to Baghdad instead of flying.

I would rather that the duty officer and duty NCO for each unit carry a sidearm at all times - that way, at least SOMEONE is armed.

I would agree with Mike, and this has taken place. After 9/11, my Battalion C.O had the Duty Sergeant armed.

Great point top, and kind of what I was getting at. Obviously mine was not carefully worded enough.

What I meant to the person obviously offended by what I said is you cannot just "arm officers." Some of them absolutely CANNOT shoot a weapon to save their lives. Some enlisted ranks are the same way. So to just come out and say that isn't going to solve anything. It needs to be far more strict than that.

After 24 years of watching that sort of thing from inside the belly of the beast, I agree...however, people who can't handle the responsibility of firearms should not be in any way associated with the military. Our politically correct "fighting force" is, in fact, the problem.

A sidearm should be part of every uniform. Optional BBQ guns for Mess Dress.

As it stands now, military bases are very large "victim disarmament zones" full of folks who should be perfectly capable of taking care of their own business.

Its funny when you purchase a gun at the AAFES store on base, you sign about 50 slips of paper saying you know you can't keep the gun in your quarters on base. The last paper is a stern warning from the base commander to get that gun the hell off of the base or face prosecution. Then they escort you into the parking lot and see that you drive off the base.

    its so stupid.

why does almost everyone of these shootings end up being connected with anti-depressants?

So, this shooting happened at the motorpool, right? The shooter was a medic, right? Whats a medic doing in a motorpool? I'm thinking this was over a woman.

AJ is reporting that he was upset about being ripped off by another military member. A non military member friend of his disclosed a feud he had with a person or persons on base, so maybe that has something to do with it.

apparently he was also pissed at the Army for giving him a hard time on a pass to return to Pueto Rico awhile back for his moms funeral
