No such thing as "in your dad's name". If you can legally carry a shotgun in your car, it doesn't matter who it belongs to as long as you have it with their permission (as in not stolen).

    Exactly.
You can also carry it while driving your spouse's car, boyfriend/girlfriend's car, best friend's car, etc.
    As long as you are:
    A. Legally allowed to possess a weapon,
    and
    B. Permitted by the owner to drive the vehicle in question, and are not involved in anything illegal (outside of minor traffic violations), or a member of a criminal streetgang...

    you are okay.

Yes to the gun rack question. You could walk down the street with it on your back if you chose to, but prepare to be hassled.

    Careful guys.
    I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole.

i am thinking about buying a rifle and i do not know the rules in Texas too well. I was placed in a mental hospital when i was 16. Now I am 18 and doing so much better. Do my records from before i was 18 have say in whether i get a firearm? And does being placed in a hospital bar me from owning a firearm?

Good catch. The advice is still good though: it's legal as long you're legally allowed to own a long gun. So now the question is if he's allowed to own one...

I know the mental hospital thing would disqualify from a CHL, but I'm not sure about ownership.

you cant drive past a school with a gun in the car? or say if your passing by a military base?

No you cannot drive within 1000 feet of a school with a shotgun as the OP asked.

You can drive past military bases all day long. Not sure why you even brought that up.

    ETA:

One should also know all thew prohibited places under Texas law.
