Other way. They bought and killed Continental.
The latest story seems very suspect. Why wasn't the sleeping man woke up and why was a US Marshal that happened to be near the gate volunteer to kick them off? I ain't buying it but yeah, United still sucks. Picking up a co-worker now, I hope the UA flight crew didn't assault him.

As per the story they didn't wake the sleeping man because the plane was half full and they could sit in another row so why bother having three guys shoulder to shoulder on a row and empty rows? Likely the Marshal was there due to heightened security protocols at United gates for copy cat incidents.
What is sad is that an emergency exit row with an extra inch or two of leg room is now some sort of a prestigious seat that demands an extra premium. I remember when they could not give them away.
When the merger took place Continental management ruled the combined company. As a lifetime Elite FFer on Continental, from my perspective Continental ruined United.
From the announcement:
"United is buying Continental, and the combined company will keep the United name and be based in Chicago. Jeffery A. Smisek, Continental’s chief executive, would run the company."

Former business partner was later high up in Continental's IT department before the merger.
Was only exceeded in technical genius by being a lovable and charming con man.
