I've been to "The Range" in South Austin, one of the better indoor ranges I've been to in Texas. Super clean, nice gun store too.

I was telling what I knew from years back when I lived there. Things change. Is that still a 100M indoor range ?

Another thing you may need to know: Usually when a passing driver in Texas gives a "one-finger salute", he's not giving you the bird. In TEXAS, a raised index finger is the "Howdy" sign.

If you have pets, Dr. Jim Holcomb is a super Vet out in southwest Austin.

If you hunt, the TP&W HQ is there, please go by to meet some Game Wardens, they are great sources of info.

Yep. Ranges and shops. I’m familiar with the area and will have some time on my hands when in town next month.
My favorite indoor range for handguns would be Shady Oaks in Cedar Park, they have small but decent shop there also. Outdoor ranges for rifle would be Copperhead out in Smithwick. Designated shops worth visiting I would put GT distributors in Pflugerville at the top of the list. Not sure about south Austin as I never go there. Blackjack is a gunsmith, with a little gunshop, but decent. Eliteguns is good as well, but haven't been in awhile. Same with the gun connection out in Taylor.

    Hi all,

I recently took a job in Austin and will be moving to Texas in a month.

Yes I'm from California, but don't worry, I'm one of the Pro-2A guys who is escaping from the socialist republic of CommieFornia. I'm part of the CalGuns community, CRPA, NRA-ILA, and have made regular donations (with little positive effect on my 2A rights unfortunately).

I made the decision to move last year after visiting a gun store in Dallas. The store was called Riflegear, and I actually found out about it because RifleGear has a location in Southern California where I used to purchase many firearms. I went into the store and was amazed. It was huge, posh, and had basically all of my dream guns that are practically banned for purchase in California due to the "safe gun roster".

I looked at two of my dream guns, a HK VP9 Match, and a HK SP5. When the guy brought the guns out of the case, I was in awe, handling the guns, hearing the slide rack back. He said, "If you have your Texas DL, and a credit card, I can have you out of here in 10 minutes." Hearing that, I almost cried. No 10-day "cooling off" period. No handgun purchasing limit. Just pure unadulterated Pro-2A FREEEEEDOM!

But alas, it was not to be, I hesitantly told him I was just visiting Texas for a wedding and I just wanted to see the guns since they aren't available in California. He looked at me, kinda smiled, and said, "Well, time to move to Texas now, right?"

And I agreed with him, whole heartedly. I started my job search in November 2021, and I got a job offer a week ago to a great organization which offered me a great position in the city.

I'm still a month away from living in REAL AMERICA, but I just wanted to introduce myself, and remember, even in places like CommieFornia, there are some serious Pro-2A people who have had their rights stripped away and want to get them back badly. Appreciate what you have Texans, NEVER ever let the progressive left take an inch, because if you do, they will take a mile. Look at California as an example where Pro-2A patriots are treated like criminals and 2nd class citizens. We aren't even able to purchase Gen 4 Glocks (Canadian citizens can purchase one with zero issues). That's how bad it's gotten in CommieFornia.
I'm willing to bet this lil gem has already been mentioned somewhere in the 11pages of replies, but, in the off chance it was omitted...texasguntrader dot com. You're welcome, LOL. It might be my favorite "gunshop" in the city. I describe it as the Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace of local firearms.
I wanted to chime in w/ my vote for The Range at Austin, as well. I've been a member for over a yr & it's well worth the $50/mo...super clean range, everything's new, the RSOs don't hawk or bug ya unless yr conducting yrself like a haphazard dipstick, +the retail floor makes ya feel like yr walking around in some badass video game world (fun to window-shop, but significantly above market pricing)

Hey Mate, fellow CalGun member here as well. Same moniker used on CG. Wife and I are house hunting in Tyler and Lufkin are? Hoping to get back into bass fishing and East Texas seems to be the place to do that. Hope eventually to find some place like Burro Canyon to shoot my Rem 700 5R I bought from Rifle Gear I FV here in TX. Good luck on the job in Austin. Oh and ditch that CA license plates as soon as you can. Mine say South Dakota so I not get too many middle fingers at traffic lights. LOL
    Keep your powder dry!

I just got a membership with "The Range". Quickly becoming my favorite place to target shoot.

Nice. I spent many thousands of dollars at the Fountain Valley location.

Have you been to the Dallas/Plano location? It's one of the best gun stores I've ever seen. Good 100 yard range too.

As for plates, one of the first things I did was swap out my Cali plates for Texas plates. The Cali plates are going to be target practice when I visit my buddies property next week (yes he has his own range).

Austin may be the most liberal city in the Gulf South outside of New Orleans. We call it "The People's Republic of Travis". But there are plenty good folks there and a really great gun-shop, "McBride's" Texas laws have proscriptions which neuter the local gun grabbers. There are some ranges, including "Red's" in South Austin. You'll like it fine. Speak with our member here, "CycleGuy", who is very familiar with Austin.h

Welcome to the South and to Texas !
Liberal is a very kind way to out the preponderance of the voters here...

    Welcome sir
