What he is "doing" is highlighting that he's the one in politics and in the media "doing" anything.

Effective doesn't really play into this.

At least he's doing something. He answered some of the criticism against him that he was just grandstanding before.
Maybe they'll make a difference down there, at least in rounding up the illegals with criminal records and making a huge display.

Are they obligated to follow federal EOs when activated?
If so, it's a money blowing circus.

If not, what state law are they enforcing?
Does Texas have an immigration law to enforce?

    This ain't good. I hope I'm mistaken.

A powerful gaggle of Texas citizen protesters got the Governor's attention. They homed in on the United States Constitution:

Article I. Section 10. Third Clause.

"No State shall, without the Consent of Congress ... engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay."

There you have it. The Governor has declared war on an invasion by illegal aliens, mobilized his State's military forces, and stuck it to Obama where it counts: In the court of public opinion.

As for legality, Texas law enforcement may enforce Federal Law as they see practicable.

The purpose of this massive effort is not to apprehend illegals, but to keep them from crossing over in the first place; hence less people to take care of.

A show of military force on the border is long overdue. All obstacles can be overcome unless they are over watched by observation and accurate/lethal fires.

The Governor has now made this Mexico's problem and stiffed the Commander In Chief at the same time.

    Brilliant.

ten of thousands of people streaming over the border illegally would constitute an invasion by any definition

Heard on the news earlier today that if the guard actually apprehends any illegals, they have to turn them over to border patrol. How does this do anything different? The people currently coming across want to be caught.

Agree its a fine mess. From what I understand though...the Border Patrol is totally swamped with paperwork and rounding up and tending to this who do turn themselves in. So this leaves the cartels and criminals to stroll in.

Perry certainly is doing something. Unfortunately its not enough, Texas shouldnt be having to do it as it is one of the very few things the federal government actually should do.

I'm trying to figure out how Perry sending the National Guard is an "act of war". If they were crossing the border, sure. Having military forces on the border is pretty standard in many parts of the world. It doesn't say much for our status as a "first world nation" but it is hardly an act of war.

1000 unarmed guardsmen to cover 1200 miles of border. Not a huge guard density there. It's political grand standing. The fed will come after Tx like they did Az and should any undocumented citizen get a bruise the guard will have the DoJ up its ass with civil rights violations. Not sure what he can do with the ones they catch aside from trespassing charges if they are on private property. Other wise he has to detain them till ICE shows up to release them. He is basically pissing in the wind.

Controlling the border is one aspect to this. A bigger piece of the pie is the reason they come to TX. If they couldn't get jobs, bennies for their families they'd move to other pastures. Hit them where it hurts; but them who would donate to Perry's war chest? Can't have a denial of cheap labor now can we. This situation benefits both parties so we're not going to get any type of solution in the near future.
