I think the rise of socialists and other progressives is like the tea party rise a few years ago. They disrupt the establishment bit that is it. The difference will be that the tea party wanted everything their way and held out for "perfection" on most things which split the votes. The new left will still vote as a block which is scary. I am sure the establishment will throw some ultra liberal bills out there that the entire left will support to keep the far left happy and voting in a block. That is where the strength of the left lies. They will debate, amend, argue, etc but vote aye or nay as a group, where the right did not.
