As bad as corruption used to be is getting more westernized. And the Ukrainian government doesn't stick its nose into every little thing like our massive govt can and does.

Is paying thousands of dollars for permits and inspections just to build a small backyard patio that is attached to your house any less of a bribe or are we just OK with it?

I was apprehensive about corruption but have yet to see it. I have spoken to police twice here. Once looking for a drunk acquaintance after curfew and once near the front when I took a photo of a damaged govt building over the top of a undercover police car (pretty sure they thought I took a photo of them, but I intentionally kept them out of the shot). They asked for my documents, scrolled through my photos and wished me a good day. I have not heard any sort of story of government or police asking for any sort of tips or bribes. I have heard about stuff at the border getting stolen, but I don't think it is the border guards. Bottom line, I haven't seen anything to suggest Ukraine is actually any more corrupt than anyone else, they are just less PC about it.

I think the corruption is more at the top. How much money did we throw at Iraq and Afghan officials for it to be stolen and disappear.
Im concerned that much of the aid money won't go to aid.

Just like in America most police, FBI, military members are outstanding citizens. It's the scum at the top. politicians pulling strings enrich their families, essentially laundering money.

Many don't trust the Ukrainian government, probably shouldn't. Doesn't mean we can't trust but verify. Attach strings to the money. Or use the money to secure american interests in the country.

Unfortunately we don't trust our government much either.

I am against the things you mention that take place here. Most, but not all of what I heard about Ukrainian corruption tends to be traced back to zelensky.

Its hard to be corrupt when you haven't been in politics long enough to build those relationships... not saying he is clean but think about it.

Who in US politics have accrued the most wealth on meager salaries? The ones who have been there longest. Why do you think that is?? There is a reason its called the swamp and there are swamp creatures... its one of the reasons Trump was so feared and hated by both sides. I know you know this, just repeating.

I don't really keep up with Zelensky's politics or personal finances, but the very fact he isnt a career politician makes me trust him a little more than most.

Some of Ukraine's military needs a lot of training. But bravery and sacrifice to protect YOUR home allows people to do amazing things.


Part of the issue with that 2h firefight and the dude catching it from a BTR is comms... the rashists do have some good tech. They can rapidly triangulate radio xmit locations and then drop a bunch of artillery there it doesnt matter if it is a Baofeng or an AN/PRC152, they'll drop some rounds on ya. As a result it is difficult to communicate.

It's a capability the US military has as well (just in case you thought you could chat on some ham band radio in your civil war fantasy)

I'm not quite sure of the context of your expression of a 'civil war fantasy', but if you're meaning those that hope it comes to a civil war thinking it would be a happily ever after movie scene, or a video scenario, I understand.

I certainly hope it doesn't come to a confrontational, as in actual combat, civil war, but when you have close to half the population that can't agree with the other close to half, and in some cases turned violent, you have to think maybe it is a bit more than civil unrest. Civil war is a possibility, and it's a fool that doesn't prepare for possibilities.

He has been found to have been involved in the same corrupt activities that he campaigned against, as well as others.

Last year 5 congressmen saw better investment returns than pelosi. All 5 have been in Congress for 10 years or less and 3 of the 5 have been in Congress for 5 years or less.

Just because someone hasn’t spent 50 years in politics doesn’t mean they can’t be corrupt. Sometimes existing corruption helps people get into politics.

If you like him then that’s your choice. We are all free to have whatever opinions we want.

Germany is beholding to Russia because Merkel was a bitch and fought Trump when he warned of relying on Russian oil.
