I didn't put it down...but my S&W 329 with some Buffalo Bore ammo was super unpleasant. Made it through a cylinder, once...don't care to fire again...

Hearing all these stories about shooting high powered exotic firearms and calibers, I’m feeling a little inadequate. Like an average joe at a porn industry convention.
We'll, just ask, and come to the next reunion. I'm sure we can oblige (not necessarily with the porn.)

Marlin 450 bfr revolver and a S&W 500 revolver... both were beyond unpleasant... To each their own, but I cannot fathom enjoying shooting those things. One cylinder of each was honestly too much for my 165lb frame.

S&W 629 with partial lug in .44 mag. I could shoot it but didn’t enjoy it. A Desert Eagle in .44 mag was not pleasant either.

Benelli pump 12 ga with 3” magnum buckshot shells. Shoulder buster for sure. Five shells was all I could take.

I do enjoy shooting 10mm and .357 mag.

The first time I fired a 1911 Colt, I was in an enclosed area with sub par hearing protection. The sound traveled right up my right arm and into my right ear. Made me stop firing for awhile and still have poor hearing in that ear. Pretty unpleasant but my fault.

The first time I shot my Danish Rolling Block.
My fellow BPCR shooters (Trapdoor guys) gave me some 500 gr 45-70 rounds... I shot about 20 off the bench.
I bruise pretty easy anyhow, but my shoulder ended up having every color of the rainbow showing.
I now shoot 405 gr loads and wear a "chicken pad".

If you stand and use good form when you shoot the big bores they do not beat you up.

When you are seated and shooting them, YOU receive 100% of the recoil.

This explains why my K98K 8mm Mauser was so unpleasant to shoot the last time I took it to the range. The range requires all rifle shooting while sitting at the bench. I had shot it years ago while standing and didn't remember it kicking like a mule.

    I understand that... now.
For sighting or checking group size, I use the least number of rounds possible off the bench.
The bench stuff is all smaller calibers now (especially after having shoulder surgery some time back).

There are high shooting benches designed to be used while standing. It bugs me that they're so rare around here.

Is there a commercial or club range in Texas with a standing bench?

I guess most clubs figure you can shoot of sticks if need be. I hunted with a few different P.H.'s while in Africa and not a one carried sticks. They all would have you soot off their shoulder if they thought you needed it. And even place I hunted you shot so they could see if you could first before going out.

My father encountered similar problems when he took men deer hunting, but his biggest problem was men with guns which weren't sighted in, sometimes even borrowed the night before from others.
He always brought the .270 with him for them to use.
He mentioned once that it had probably killed 300 deer.

That reminds me of being out on Type II lands once. I swear half those hunter bought their new rifle & first hunting rifle the night before @ Kmart.
Think about a guide leading a hunter with not previous gun handling skills, and the guide is generally in front of that idiot!

A first edition Ruger LC9. I bought into the hype of the pocket gun and purchased it without trying it first. I will NEVER buy a gun again without trigger time first. I have never sold a gun, but if I ever did, that one would be the first to go.
