I have been carrying a Ruger SR9c for awhile now, really like it, but thinking of going to the SR40. what do you think? seems like they can be had pretty reasonably. wondering if it is worth the switch. thanks!!!

I wouldn't change just for the caliber difference. All things considered, I don't believe it would make a big difference. Now, if you want a .40, I'd say go for it. But .................. it isn't a big deal.

Not worth starting a new thread for but where in the Houston/Cypress area would be a good place to buy one of these surplus police pistols?

I'm thinking about picking up a G19 or G23. I prefer the 19 but if the price is right...

Not sure about the Houston area. I am in Katy and do not know of a place with police trade ins. GT Distributors in Austin has trade ins usually. Could make a weekend hill country trip out of it. Also, check Buds online. They have some usually as well. Will be harder to find the 19 trade in, but the 22, 23 and 27 are out there.

Nothing wrong with the .40. Just more expensive than the 9 .
I just bought a S&W40 on sale last week, not a lot difference in price.
I found it very accurate and fun to shoot, not much more recoil then a 9mm.

It does deliver more energy than a 9mm, but I think the difference in terms of human tissue damage from hollow points is minimal.
I'd have to call bs on that, from what I saw using hollow points comparison of the same manufacturer with a 9mm, the penetration was about the same but the cavity was about 1.5 times bigger with the .40.

I use a Glock 22 normally for my night time hog pistol. I like to keep a pistol set up to accompany me as I go into thicker stuff to find shot hogs. I recently decided to change to a M&P Core in .40, so I would have the red dot sight instead of just night sights. I hang a Surefire light under the pistol as well. I've got pistols in all kinds of calibers, but the .40 has served me well over the years for situations like this.

I have a Taurus PT140 that I use as EDC and put a box of ammo down range every two weeks, mostly Winchester WB and Federal FMJ's. The 185-190 grain bullets do have a lot of recoil, but not to much to throw off my aim. I can shoot the bullseye out of targets at 10 and 15 yrds. I do practice with my self defense ammo some, but that gets pretty pricey after a bit.

Not a thing wrong with .40 caliber. I've had a couple (Glocks) but ended up selling them to gun friends. They were actually cheaper than the 9mm police turn-in guns. And ......... if one just had to have a 9mm, one could always by a replacement barrel relatively inexpensive (and maybe an extractor if needed).

40S&W has got to stick around to keep 10mm from going completely away.
I like that I can use the same projectiles, dies, etc between the 2... I considered going 9x23 Win instead of 10mm, but dies aren't compatible, it's harder to find brass than 10mm, etc...
I like the wide range of projectile weights available,

It would be even better if everything available in 40 was also available in 10mm... but some people are "recoil sensitive" to 40.

My GF's pistol is a Ruger SR40C. She shoots it often and well. I shoot it less, but reload for it frequently.

I think the issue of whether a particular firearm, chambered for .40 S&W, is also offered in 10mm is one of frame size. While almost any pistol chambered for 9x19mm can be engineered to work in .40 S&W, the 10mm is sufficiently larger that it takes a frame of some size to make it fit.

For pistols I mostly shoot 9mm and some 22lr. Rifles I am limited to 556 because, again, if you're shooting thousands of rounds a year it's cost prohibitive unless you reload which I do not
Hell, if I had a .50BMG, as expensive as those rounds are, I would find some money to shoot it.
