I am impressed a lady that age is doing cross country rides.

That part of the world has dangers we don't have down here.

Too bad we don't have Grizzlies in Texas. They would have plenty of choices with all the Tour De France wannabe's that think they own the county roads where I live.
A big thumbs up to the bear!!!
They ( we) actually do have the same rights to state roads as motor vehicles. I will not typically ride county roads unless there is a large shoulder or bike lane, and I can not stand riders that slow down traffic by riding in a pack at peak hours, but I have also found that just planning for a two minute delay until I can pass an obnoxious cyclist by leaving 3 minutes early alleviates the aggravation.

This is one of the more ignorant things I have read lately, and why I carry when I ride.

And are supposed to comply with all road laws. In my hood, one street is a main thoroughfare to some other roads. There is a large group (30-60) of riders that come through regularly. At a 4 way stop by my house, they blast through the stop sign, as I often do on my bike, assuming no cars are at the other stop signs. This group blows through it regardless of whether there are cars stopped. So one day I slowly eased out into the street after doing my obligatory stop. They started screaming at me and shooting the bird. lolololol I rolled my window down and yelled back, "quit breaking the law!! You have to stop at that stop sign!" I went about 3 MPH through that intersection so they had to stop. They were so close they were running into each other, and falling over.

I usually wait if the group is 10 or less. I will wave them on and just let them keep rolling. But 60+ riders takes a while to get through when 2 or 3 are on a row. Plus, sometimes I am in a hurry too.

Well, I think you Lance Armstrong wannabe's should only be aloud to ride on bike trails, or public roads that have shoulder's to ride on, not out on non-shouldered county roads that are barely wide enough for two vehicles to be on.
I don't mind anyone that rides a bike solo or with a friend, but when you get a big group riding together on these roads, you are a big safety issue to everyone that lives where you choose to ride.

Oh, I know cyclist have the same rights. But most are just a PIA to deal with when they choose to ride out in the country in big groups.

The only safety issue when jackholes (not you txhillbilly, just relating my side) driving don't treat cyclists like legally entitled users of the road and try to pass in bad spots or something. Bicycles have been on roads since before cars were invented. I make sure to move over when I can and wave cars around. Lots of folks are scared to drive near cyclists and so won't pass when there is a safe place, clogging up the road for the cars behind, but I also will ride more left when it is a bad place to pass to discourage them so I don't have an oncoming car appear which makes the passing car swerve into me.

There are only so many roads and sometimes you dont have a good choice other than to ride a bad road to get somewhere good and safe to ride.

Stop signs are a case-by-case basis... but if there are other users, I stop and go predictably like any other road user should.

In my experience, real farmers and ranchers and country folk don't have a problem with cyclist on the roads they live on, its new comers and entitled people in an ungodly hurry that want to lump all cyclists into one sub-human road user group to look down on for doing the same thing car drivers do.

Even on a 2 lane road with no shoulder you should be able to pass safely if your driving skills are half-way reasonable. Give a safe distance, don't go by too fast and you're past them in a few seconds, no different that passing a tractor or combine or something...

Just because something may be legal does not mean it is smart.

My only complaints are riders not riding in single file and ignoring stop signs. I also don't think it is too smart to ride on a two lane 55MPH country road that has absolutely no rideable shoulder when good alternatives are readily available.
