This is merely an observation, and I'm not trying to p*ss anyone off...

I find it disturbing that members are banned. I use the term "over-moderated" a lot when referring to forums. I was banned from TexasCHL because I asked why Cotton insisted on adding "(banned)" after referring to a forum member, and then asked, "I support open carry, are you going to ban me too?". Next thing I knew, I was banned. So be it (and no big deal to me), but I think most forum moderators are on some sort of power trip, and the minute somebody gets under their skin, or doesn't agree with their views (and isn't shy about saying so), they're banned.

We're gun folks, and I think our passion for gun rights is too often viewed as rude behavior simply because some of us are a bit more vocal. I'm not saying it's this way here, but having seen txinvestigator and MrRedneck banned - here, of all places, where we talk about guns - I'm questioning whether or not the moderator(s) overracted without giving the situation (whatever it was) a sufficient chance to cool down, especially since this is a legislative year, where emotions can and do run a bit higher than usual.

    Just sayin...

A lot of stuff goes on "behind the scenes" too, through PMs. Warnings issued, conversations had, that sort of thing. One can't judge moderation decisions solely on what they see within public topics on the forums.

MR. Redneck had been given a couple of vacations previously and sent PMs that were inflammatory and insulting. He has been asked to stop the threats and personal attacks and refused to do so. He jumped into threads simply to stir the pot and piss people off and continued to do so after being asked not to repeatedly.
I don't know how in the world you could consider this board over moderated. It is loosely run and very lightly Modded. Hell, some of the stuff I say on here would get me banned in a hot second on other boards.

Having been a moderator on a different forum, Clockwork makes a VERY good point!

This site is absolutely fair, Don't mess with City Hall (El Guapo/Texas1911) If somebody has a complaint the proper way is a private message in plain language without accompaning cuss words and I would imagine that you would be fairly heard....But to rant and rave at the "Boss man" out here in the open and ridicule him won't cut the mustard.

I don't want to be banned from here for saying my thoughts about the people our Military are fighting for ten years or so, thus I guess I can think it and the rest of the readers likely feel the same but here is about GUNS......Thanks, for the opportunity to speak...Keep up the good work Texas1911 !!

I have been on other forums and would not have joined this one if I thought the mods were unfair or the site poorly run. I limit myself to two gun forums and two fishing forums. Any more than that and I wouldn't get anything done, so I need to pick sites that are going to be positive and someplace that I want to be involved in. There are plenty of forums out there that are run by egomaniacs or just not maintained at all; so I browsed through many of them before deciding which one to join. There were some issues with a couple people that got banned on the other forum that I've been a member of since 2009. A few people were a little unsupportive of the banning, but hadn't been around long either. I explained it to them like this :

You and I are at our local bar, relaxing, bs'ing and having a drink. Someone new guy walks in and starts bitchin and moaning about how the radiator guy down the street is such an ass and how he's always gettin screwed over and blah blah blah..... How likely are you to want him to continue to hang out??? Now, let's say the same guy comes in, says hello, gets a drink, says calmly says " man, I need to cool down, it's been a rough one".
Any person is much more likely to treated "fairly and respectfully" when they are shown the same. Not my forum, not my rules, so I read them, abide by them and respect the decisions made by mods; if not, then why wouldn't I want to leave?

I like the demeanor and the "atmosphere" and have no issue with how its run.

Actually, I have had disagreements with the mods on here but the discussion was civil and respectful in both directions. I was banned temporarily and deservingly so, I also apologized over my reaction to some very insulting comments another individual posted. It was not the appropriate way to respond and I realized that. The mods were correct in sending me on a short “vacation” and I had learned my lesson.

I don’t always agree with some of the comments of the mods here, but I do think that they site itself is run very fairly. I actually am an administrator on a very large military forum and I know how much work it is. The mods on this forum surely earn their pay…

    Cheers! M2

I have posted on several forum sites over the last few years...

This is my first gun related forum but even in my short time here it seems fine. I posted on other sites and they were pure power hungry nazi. I you disagree with them insta ban

Agreed, I moderate on another gun forum and mean redneck was permanetly banned there as well after no less than 10 warnings, PM conversations etc. then he became TGT's issue and now is gone from here. I hate to see anyone banned but some people keep pushing buttons until it happens.

This site is run about as fairly as it gets!
Don't think so? Go join some of the other forums out there and see how quickly you get banned for seemingly trivial stuff because you're not "in the clique" of usual posters there.
This particular site doesn't have a "good ol' boys club" type of attitude.
Everyone is welcomed to post, speak their mind, and share their opinions.

And just for the record, I've seen the mods here issue way more warnings than bans.

I've seen him banned from several sites unfortunately. I say unfortunately because he means well - but has yet to learn how to politely disagree with someone without being way outta line about it. He also has the distressing tendency to use hyperbole to get a point across - to the point that he crosses lines time and again, despite repeated warnings about doing so.

Pa always taught me that ya don't shoot the hoss yer ridin' on.....an' yeah, I've had my share of warnings here myself - even a short vacation when I continued to push things. So if you think THIS site is over-moderated, you sure wouldn't like most of the others.

Its a problem that can't be fixed. Some people are not going to agree with certain people getting banned. Since I have been here, I have see only a handful of people get banned. Most were retards that come in her like they were the second coming of all things taticool, and they got put in their place then they reacted poorly and got banned. I think everybody gets that.

Then there have been other bannings:
West Texas: the guy was a powder keg and personally insulted people myself included. Unlike some I have thick skin and started a conversation with him in PMs and we each learned a few things and put our differences aside. I think his perspective is missed on these boards.
TX Investigator: When he thought you were full of shit, he told you so in no uncertain terms. While he was argumentative, He didnt really call people names or other obvious insults. Unfortunately he was a wealth of information and really good perspective on things at times that made you think and question things which is good IMO and he will be missed dearly.
Mr. Redneck: That guy was full of opinions for sure. I think he will be missed by many people too.

The thing is I can't say whether any of them should have been banned or not. Some posts may have been deleted and I surely don't know what any of them did in their PMs. For all I know, one of the Mods sent an email saying "Hey try to cool it" and they replied with a well thought out **** You! Well, buhbye and don't let the door hit you on the ass.

At one point in the past I thought for that reason there should be a part or section of the forums reserved to they "Why's" of things so that people knew why things happened. However being a forums admin on several forums since then, I know that that would backfire into a bunch of "you are playing favorites" and "how do you know that's what they meant" and "Well look what XXXX said in YYYY thread and he didn't get banned." No Way. That is Pandora's Box for sure.

So in the end the Best thing is that certain people disappear along with their visible venom and you just have to trust that the Mods are reasonable.

The one problem I do see, is that since moderation is so lax here, you run the risk of people not knowing where the lines are and they get crossed inadvertently resulting in the banning of someone who would not have crossed the line if they knew where it was.

So my only suggestion is be a little more visible in threads about where the lines are so people (myself included) don't have to worry about crossing one without knowing it.

Good points, RR - and from <ahem> personal experience, I can tell ya that if you cross the lines, you WILL be warned about it. If you choose to ignore the warnings, THEN the hammer drops - but they DO warn ya in advance!
