i mentioned to him to check out the hybrids instead of a full evinstead!
Wife has a Honda hybrid. Great gas mileage but now the worry of two powertrain sources. Fast acceleration since the front wheels use ICE and rear uses electric. But I wonder if they did the best electric power management. You still have a 12vt battery that powers unknown functions and doesn't get charged in electric mode. First 12vt battery died at 12 months and a load test on the replacement shows it's aging faster than it should. Wet cells for some reason so I'll replace with an AGM in the future.

That’s about as good of an idea as that titanic sub.

I still see a lot of Teslas on the road. Lots of Amazon EV vans (made by Rivian) too. The range drop is probably a lot worse in the cold than the heat.

Any updates on how the EVs are doing in the heat? I'd expect a significant drop in range as the temperatures climb.
"Optimal" temp range for Lithium Ion Batteries is between 50 and 110F. The hardest abuser on those batteries in Texas is probably the AC on full for the entire work day with that giant sliding door opening or being open at all times. Anything below 50 is when degridation of the battery capacity may start. Even then if its just 30-40 in the winter, they're likely seeing about a 15-20% loss in range. That doesn't seem to be dissuading Nordic drivers from being the highest per capita buyers of EVs.

I did however hear horror stories during the '21 freeze of people going to Tesla chargers and they simply couldn't charge their batteries because plugging them in wouldn't allow the charger to charge the batteries until they came up to a certain temperature. The batteries have a built-in 'battery warmer' for such weather, however after 30-60 minutes of the heater simply unable to bring the temperature up enough to start charging, the car was essentially unable to charge. I assume buyers in really cold places like Canada and Northern Europe they simply put them in garages (where cars are supposed to go) and they charge overnight not caring it charges a little slower due to needing to use electricity to heat the battery in a garage before charging.
I’ve started seeing those new Amazon vans out in the wild. Odd ducks for sure; they look very cartoonish
Might beg the question; if it looks weird but works well, is it actually weird? The are kinda ugly though haha.

When my wife had a Prius, we lost 10mpg when the 12v battery started to die.

Mileage popped right back up when we replaced the battery.

I thought I posted a video on this subject a while ago but I can't find it so here it is again. Bottom line - They look odd but really seem like they're perfect for their intended purpose. I found this video worth the time but I'm a nerd like that. Also, I always watch this guy on 2X speed so the video only wastes half as much time. :)

Amazon probably doesn't have the funds to replace their fleet at once.
Not to mention the funds to add all those chargers at each distribution center. Plus possibly adding additional transformers for all that extra power.
Charging let's say 100 trucks all charging at 30 amps is a shit-ton of power.
