Well, take a look at things from our perspective....starting with your user name. My wife views this forum from time to time - and frankly, that screen name screams "punk kid" in my eyes. I sure hope you don't talk like that around your mother - but even if you do, don't do it around my wife. It's called "respect".

You're young - nothing wrong with that - but it often leads to saying things before you think them through, and while I think most of us understand it, bear in mind that you're dealing with Federal Law - the breaking of which will see you permanently barred from owning guns, voting, ever having much of a life again.....so we take it pretty seriously - and so should you. You're not a kid any more - so "who's gonna know" needs to permanently leave your vocabulary as an excuse to do something illegal, or even thinking about trying to skirt a firearm law. In case you haven't heard, guns aren't real popular with certain segments of our population right now, and comments/attitudes such as you exhibitted really aren't needed.

Now....if you're still reading this - congrats. It means you're mature enough to understand it's nothing personal, and you're even willing to concede there might be validity in some of my comments. If so, let's take the conversation on a much more mature level - we don't want to have someone that's come here for input and advice getting in trouble.

There's several members of this board (over 18, under 21), in fact, that have purchased guns from board members. I'm hoping that they'll be reaching out to you via PM to give you some insight as to how to better fit in with this board - it'll be ultimately to ALL of our advantage - believe it or not, we WANT young gun owners, but they also need to be able to show a reasonable level of judgement and maturity.

Bottom line....ball's in your court, bud - do you have what it takes to pick it up? Sure hope you do!!

I know we have members in the Dallas area. Maybe if you ask, they may agree to get together with you at the range and let you try some different firearms. Offer to cover the ammo and possibly the range fees. They might not accept your offer to cover their fees, but it would be nice.

This way, you can have a better idea what you are looking for. I know you state you have been around guns for a long time, but don't seem to have an idea what you want.

First off, thanks for not getting rude. The screen name - I used it on my other forums (That I made years and years ago and can't change so I'm pretty much stuck with it) and it was an easy way for me to remember my login details. I didn't really intend on sticking around after my few questions we're answered, but now that I see these boards are quite popular I may do so, and change the name aswell since it offends you. As far as hinting breaking the law - It may have seemed so. I was just curious if it was really THAT serious, which I know it is now. Kinda like not stopping 100% at a stop sign. Everyone does it, no one really cares, but technically it's still against the law. If you look at it from my point of view - Meeting a stranger on the Internet with a wad of cash in my pocket, knowing he has a gun because that's what I'm obviously there for.. It can be a bit sketchy. There's no way I'll let my mom come along for that. So that was my reasoning to questioning this law. I want to get everything cleared and checked before I go through with anything as I said before. I want to know exactly where the law stands, what can and can't get me into serious trouble, etc. I also want everyone's personal opinion on when deadly force is okay. My personal opinion is - If I can get away, Im going to do so. The LAST thing I want to do is shoot somebody. But I will if I have to, just as I have always been tought. I appreciate you guys helping me get all this sorted out and I'm sorry for those I offended by asking certain questions, but there things I need to know.

I was personally looking somewhere like a Baretta M9. I also REALLY like 1911's but they're on up there in price and I won't have enough. Since I won't be carrying until I'm 21, compact pistols are an option but not preferred. I can fit large handguns inside the car safe I'm getting. I was looking to spend maybe up to $500. Hopefully save as much as possible of course, but with income taxes coming up I think I'll be able to spare about that much.

If you want to know when deadly force is OK look at the laws as they are written, opinions can get you murder charges.

Killing another is homicide. Period. Self defense factors may be a defense to prosecution. But there may still be a trail and that may cost a fortune.

And, from what I understand, most people that are forced to take another's life seem to have a hard time getting over the mental issues that arise.

Just FYI....don't think that having a gun and a feeling that you're being threatened gives you the right to take another's life. It is not a decision to take lightly.

I agree 100%. No doubt. But if my life is threatened I'll do what I have to. One thing to take into consideration is whether the gun will get you killed or not. If someone's already got the draw on me, I ain't touching the thing.

I was in the U.S. Army and I was lucky to never had to go to war although if I did it would be "live or die"... taking a human life is NOT something I ever want on my mind. Yes I have a gun, but its more of a deterrent.. But If I have to pick between living or dying, I will always pick living.

Just FYI anything you type on the internet can be and will be used against you... think before you type... If you want to know the laws, the best thing to do is go to a police station ask them.. Before I got a gun here in TX I talked to a friend who is a cop...

I'm not too worried about it as I am going to make 100% sure I'm not breaking any laws. Thanks for the tip, there's a police station right down the road, I'll pop by there.

I am not sure what you are looking for but I just purchased a ruger p95(on sale) and put 225 rounds through it today without any problems.. total cost about $450 with ammo. hearing and eye protection...

Cabela's: Ruger P-Series Semiautomatic Centerfire Pistols

Looks like a nice little gun. Too bad I can't actually get it from the store :/ ah well.

After I get the money together I'll make a new thread in the buy and sell section.

FOR THE RECORD...an' I ain't no cop basher....but damned few cops KNOW gun laws - those that do, are generally on this board, and I think they'll confirm what I just said.

Oh....and also - FOR THE RECORD....thank you for taking my comments in the spirit in which they were intended. Shows a higher level of maturity - and if you're going to be packing a gun, you're going to need it.

I've carried since I was 16 - back then, it was the norm. Obviously, today that wouldn't fly - but back then no one thought anything about it. I've had my butt whipped BADLY when I had a gun within reach - but they were fistfights, usually brought about by my own big mouth, so I figured it was all in fun. The key is to KNOW where that "line" is - and it can move based on what your opponent is doing, so when you read scenarios on this board, take them ALL with a grain of salt - because if you pull a gun based on what you've read here, you're already in trouble. Talk to some local instructors, and ask them if they'd let you sit in on several of their training courses over the next few years if you pay 'em for *one* time. I'd be willing to bet that if you'll ask around, you'll find one that'll agree to it. That'll give you a LOT of exposure to different mindsets and scenarios, as well as some real-life stories that might give you additional insight.

Stick around, though - havin' a snot-nosed kid is always handy....if for nuthin' else than ta git us adults a beer when we need it!:D

Well the few that I asked knew the laws... Maybe I got lucky....

Or you haven't gotten into some of the nitty-gritty details. For example, next time you talk to one of 'em, ask them if there's a way to legally own a pistol-gripped shotgun with a 12" barrel. Let us know what they tell ya....

I didn't need to ask that question as I only wanted a handgun...
