My 04 gasser f250 has 315k and has the original waterpump! Honestly I haven't had to fix anything in the power train. (Other than a clutch). The suspension is worn out and the body is beaten to hell by now but the 5.4 just won't quit.

Got a 15 6.2 now and it's way way more powerful than the old 5.4. I get about 13 mpg at 75-80 mph and 15 mpg at 65-70.

$8500 buys a lot of fuel: 63,750 miles worth at $2/gal and 65-70 MPH! Not to mention, much cheaper oil changes...

Resale is where it will get you if that is a concern.

A gasser with 200k is a whole different market than a diesel with the same.

    Heh!
I got nearly 20 mpg coming back from Alpine, towing the same trailer.
    Downhill, tailwind.
Not really. Only averaged 15.3 mpg.

I average right at 15mpg, in my 01 half-ton, with no trailer, but the gas pedal is pretty much buried all the time as well, lol.

I was comparing his 6.2 gas F250 to a comparable diesel. He said he gets 13mpg at 75-80mph. My stock 2011 Duramax gets the same mpg at the same speed but with a 16klb trailer. Without a trailer it'll get 22mpg at 68 (not 70) if I stay out of the boost.

Just throwing my real world results out there.
At 68, I'll get 24mpg or better on flat ground and no wind.
Both of those conditions are rare out here though.

Coming back from Big Bend this spring I had one helluva tailwind. Must've been pushing us 25mph. In my '08 GMC Sierra 1500 (6.0) which normally gets 12.5mpg combined avg, I was cruising at 85-90mph in 4cyl mode getting 16mpg lol. I've never had the cylinders deactivate at that speed before. I felt bad for all the traffic going westbound haha

my MPG has dropped so bad since I got the remote start and turbo timer installed. Plus as a weekend vehicle I just romp the shit out of it. I average about 12. haven't calculated for awhile but i typically get 300 mpt

The cost of new vehicles is one of the reasons a brand new car/truck/van/suv will probably never grace the gravel of my driveway. I'll let someone else take that initial depreciation hit and pick up a few years old newused.

    I haven't bought a new vehicle since 2000.
A little research and a wrench goes a long way.

Last new one I bought was in '82.
Everything since has been used, with low mileage, trade-in usually every three years.
Along with wrenches the past five years, you better be a nerd ...

newest car, besides the company car (2013), is a 2007.

Nowadays it's insane. Next one we buy will probably be a lower mileage with some warranty on it.

Strange argument. Financing $8000 so that 5 years later you have a $4,000 delta or 10 years later getting a $2,500 delta. (KBB, F250 Lariat 4WD CrewCab Short Bed 5/95K or 10/200K - I'm bored at work and was curious myself)

You don't have to do any Net Present Value of money exercises to see that's a double loser.

Buy it if you want it, but for most folks it's as much a vanity purchase as really functional.

I wish they'd get over the horsepower wars, and retune down to about 350HP and maybe 600 ft/lbs of torque but get the mileage back into the high teens or low twenties, like the old 7.3 PSD. That would be a whole different value proposition. My buddy with the '14 is loathe to admit it, but he misses his '95. It got almost double the mileage pulling the same RV. They could do it if they wanted. Heck, they could probably charge $8500 for the "EcoTune" version of the diesel.

The old PSDs couldn't meet current emissions BS, and without current emissions BS the new diesels would probably get the mileage of old.

Screw all the emissions BS. Lower emissions by cutting mileage in half and burning twice the fuel, what could go wrong?
