Is anyone else rethinking their concealed carry? I am. I don't know if I could have helped in Dallas last Thursday night but I could have, I would have. Even here in Texas these truly sick people are here and we may have to deal with them. If the police are having a hard time, I better get on the ball.

I've starting carrying my backup gun again religiously and an extra mag for my primary gun. In the last couple months I was letting those things slip. Would a backup gun help you in a mass shooting? Sure... Like any other gun it gives me options. I like to hang out with gun people and professionals. Most of them are always armed like me. Sometimes they may not be. It would be nice after hearing multiple rifle shots continuing to hand my extra gun to someone I trust and then have two of us to fight. If my family is with me and I decide to go back to help once they are safe, I can always give my extra gun to my wife (who I can't get to carry yet, but working on it) so she has something to protect herself and my kid. It just gives me options.

An extra magazine for my primary gun is just a smart thing to do. If you are going to carry a gun, an extra magazine seems like a good idea. If you think about going up against a mad man or women with a rifle and they are dedicated to kill as many people as possible and give their own lives doing it, more ammo and more gun is better.

Things like this even want me to put a rifle in my EDC bag just in case.

What do you think? Has it changed the way you carry? Should I change what I'm carrying?

I'm not. If armed terrorists are attacking a march, tactically its the best to do what everyone did and get the heck out of there.

And unless you hit somewhere that is not armored the guy now knows where you are looks smiles and opens up with his rounds that will not be hindered with your skin.

Sorry no stranger is worth my life. You want to be a cowboy have at it. Everyone will sing your praises as they lower the box you are in 6 feet under.

What if you can't get out. You see the bad guy about to kill another person/police and you have a clear shot at the bad guy. Would you take the shot?

Body armor isn't a magical force field. You aren't going to be a happy camper. Granted being doped up can numb people up to the effects. Hollywood Bank shootout for instance. Speaking of that I wonder if how many rounds actually landed on those guy before they were finally taken out.

And like the guy in East Texas, and like the Dallas shooting, you get the attention of the body armor clad dude with the RIFLE who then turns,,charges you and fires multiple rounds at you while closing.

Besides die, what do you guys imagine you will do?

As he had asked, I couldn't get out, so doing nothing means I would probably be dead anyway.

If as also stated I have a clear view, I can probably see the body armor also, if so I will try to shoot him elsewhere. Seeing as I may be dead anyway, I certainly am not going to throw my gun and beg for mercy.

    THIS.

People like to talk big. People like to play the "what if" game. Far fewer people have actually mentally prepared and thought in depth about doing the deed in all of it's horrific detail. Considering the "mindset" side of the equation is vast, the degree to which I'm referring to it is NOT for public consumption, if that's any indicator...

People should really take a look at the video of the Dallas police officer who attempted to take down one of the gunman, only to be overwhelmed with an immediate assault, overwhelming firepower, ultimately losing his life. Heartbreaking outcome, but he was a hero to be sure.

There was also the LE shooting by a Marine in Ceres, CA back in 2005, which showed a similar, violent resolve.

Here's a hint, you're not going to develop that mental resolve by hashing it out on a forum...

Certainly, I'm not going to run in like the Lone Ranger and I'm not stupid, but if I'm backed against the wall, I will do everything I can to alleviate that situation. That's been my manner all my life.

Best let the LEO handle it unless you or yours are in imminent danger.

Just got back from a Texas law shield seminar on active shooter sit. And that was pretty much the advice.

You can't save everyone and don't try and be superman

You ever train in force on force? Do you train to "see body armor"? The point I am making is the majority of us are training to battle paper hanging from a track. ;)

Of course we all want to be the one to save the day but most of the time that just won't be realistic.

My daily carry has not changed. I carry enough to defend myself in a defensive position or get myself back to my vehicle. Once there I have many options. The best one will be to leave probably.

In Dallas type scenario - Unless you have a clear shot at the perp and you are exceedingly confident that the target truly is the perp, probably best to keep the gun concealed. Be ready to draw, or even have gun in hand but still out of sight. Work on getting to safety.

Less chance of LEO confusing you for a perp. Less chance of some other CHL confusing you for a perp. Less chance of taking a pistol to a rifle fight.

But if you have no choice, you can go down fighting.

Or if you are absolutely certain you have a clear shot at the perp and you are exceedingly confident that the target truly is the perp (pretty unlikely that both occur), then take the shot recognizing your marksmanship limits. E.g., probably no pistol shot from more than 15-25 yards.

Err on the side of caution.

I've changed. I now carry with a round chambered. I also carry my .357 Sig instead of a 380 when going to a movie. Dallas is different than what we're likely to encounter. But then again, it may be the new norm. My weapon will only be drawn when my life or my family's life depends on it and I can see the threat. But run like hell is your best defense.

The point is that you don't know me and you don't know my convictions. You can certainly naysay anything, which I find you take it upon yourself often. If you would take time to read what I was responding to instead jumping to conclusions maybe you might understand a person better.

Epic! Some that have been through law enforcement "training" believe that one that has not had the same training cannot protect themselves.

I have a plastic gun (M&P9) with 17 rounds in each magazine. More is always better and carrying an extra mag for an auto-loader is always a good idea. No matter what you carry in your gun, double it by having an extra mag.

Everyone wants an if this/then that way to handle and active shooter. There isn't any. Thought experiments like all the comments are good because between all of us we can figure out better ways to do things and find things that one of us on our own won't think about. But in the end, if you are there, your gun gives you options. Evacuate the area might be the right action. Returning fire might be the right action. Helping the police storm a building might be the right action.

The hardest part of being in an active killer situation is that doing anything can get you killed, as well as doing nothing may get you killed. And you maybe killed by the active killer, someone helping him/her, a bomb that someone left behind, or a police officer that was trying to stop the bad guy. All those outcomes could happen whether you help, evacuate, or do nothing.

Keep your head, try and take a breath and think, then act.

My first piece of defensive gear is comfortable shoes I can run in. I'm more worried about getting caught in something like the below than a mass shooting. Makes me want to start daily driving the truck...
