One Hot Minute is a weird album. For this go around, the Red Hot Chili Peppers hired a new guitarist and changed their sound to a much truer funk style rather than the skeletal punk/funk sound they previously used. Despite having three major singles, the album didn't sell as well as their previous album and was considered a disappointment. Singer Anthony Keidis was battling full-blown heroin addiction, and his lyrics were much darker than usual ("My tendency for dependency is offending me/It's upending me/I'm pretending to be strong and free from my dependency/It's warping me.")

If we are gonna dig up some RCHP lets do some Frusciante

for comparison to his rock bottom music, a song from '97 with River Pheonix

The whole "smile from the streets you hold" album is good in strange way. It's terrible on one hand but you can hear the genius and talent coming through in many ways.

Playin catchup here....good find on that Bowie "Afraid of Americans"...had all but forgotten it, once used it as the soundtrack for a video to poke fun at some Canadian friends (of course they're all calling to talk about hockey right now...ugh).

    Here's a lesser known work of Glenn's:

Classic. The indian casino tour is a byotch.

Maybe not that obscure, but currently relevant:

Driving home with 13 year old daughter from doing some track wind sprints....dialed up some Fat Old Sun (a la Pink Floyd), she thought it was cool...ergo, I am cool.

Funny how one of the best punk rock songs I've ever heard was written for the goofiest Star Trek movie:

The guy on the bus is the guy who actually wrote and sung the song.

Charles Manson always claimed Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter" theory was bunk based on the simple fact he was never a very big Beatles fan. He states he's a fan of the music he grew up with in the 30's and 40's, and claims Bing Crosby as his hero. This song certainly seems to support that:

And one of his songs recorded by his "Family" in an attempt to sell enough albums to pay for his lawyer for the case which eventually earned him the death penalty:

It occurred to me this evening how much I was into Shonen Knife some 25 years ago.

What reminded me? See the next post.

    I ran across Baby Metal.

I can always count on the various J-Pop and K-Pop production machines to remind me that no matter how crazy I think I am, there's a world of folks out there even more nuts than me. And they spend money on music, too.

    does this count.....

That reminds me of this Dr. Demento playlist favorite from Eddie Murphy:

EDDIE MURPHY - Boogie In Your Butt (extended) - YouTube

Reminds me of one of my favorite soundtracks, Blade Runner. Vangelis did an excellent job matching the music up to the movie!

Mentioning Vangelis reminded me that they've redone the Carl Sagan PBS series, "Cosmos," which airs on Fox and the NatGeo channel. I watched the first episode but it doesn't really grab me like Sagan's original (which aired in 1980), which I had recorded on video tape but those tapes have since deteriorated due to age. :( :bomb:

The new "Cosmos" doesn't have the theme music that Sagan's show had....which used music FROM Vangelis.

THIS sounded like the cosmos. The original "Cosmos" theme:

...but then I did notice that Brannen Braga's name was on the producer's list. He and Rick Berman hosed the final Star Trek series, Enterprise, because they were too effin' cheap to hire a composer to write a theme song for it, instead using some chickenshit, suckassed pop song.

You have to be pretty old to remember it, but it was a very popular song....
