    Trump got their attention!
Yep--they announced that their special envoy was enroute PRONTO! I'm not convinced it will work; but I think it's worth a try. It is HIGHLY offensive what the Mexican government has done over the years--including printing leaflets informing their citizens how to illegally make it into the US, and studiously permitting/enabling Central Americans to transit their country (without consequence) to make their way to the US.

These tariffs will most certainly unnerve the market, but I think Mexico needs to be forced to blink and manage their own southern border much, much better. They also need to insist that if Central Americans make it into Mexico that their asylum requests be made then and there. If they have a legitimate claim to asylum, then making it to Mexico qualifies as the first safe nation in accordance with the UN Treaty on Refugees. The migrants must not be permitted to pick and choose for themselves--THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL RIGHT TO COME TO THE UNITED STATES. Forcing this issue will almost certainly cause Mexico to fortify their Southern border, because in reality, they don't want a bunch of Central Americans staying there permanently either.

I think there is an agreement to be forged here, but we'll just have to wait and see . . .

At the heart of the matter.....we cannot control our border even with our enormously well funded resources.

We expect Mexico, with comparatively meager resources, to do it for us.

All the tariffs will do is pass the cost along to US consumers.
Cars, clothing, fruits and veggies and most categories of consumer goods will go up!!!

Trump was pretty peeved at his economic adviser for saying that on FoxNews.

Seems to me, and apparently to most economists, that we are pissin' into our own boots.

No, we expect Mexico to protect their TINY southern border--an extremely simple matter. Fortifying that border will choke off the migrant caravans and make the matter of securing the US' southern border MUCH simpler.

    Gunz are icky.
Remittances should be taxed at least to 35%.
Its insane the amount of $ that flow out of the USA.
That is where OrangeMan should hit them.
The .gov of Mexico has already run their mouth about we better not touch that cash cow.
The tariffs really won’t do much. Even if they got to the highest levels it would just cause facility closures in Mexico whose workers would then come here.
Mexico will never seal its southern border. Mordida is gonna mordida.

So far Trump's best tools for foreign policies have been threats of sanctions and tariffs.
Both seem to work fairly well and make the left uncomfortable as a bonus.

On another topic, I've read that the Mexican cartels have pretty much taken over the avocado business.
Beginning with extortion of the farmers and transporters and eventually stealing the business.

They haven’t quite taken over the avocado biz. They extort the farmers yearly per hectare and per kilo of harvested fruit.

Mexico is a nice country..its just full of wrong people. We should invade and purge. Relocate them all to Iran maybe.

Then we could run the border and have a nice southern place to vacation.

We would have our own avocado farms

As with all radical changes, like expensive tariffs, there are opportunities for others to fulfill the needs. As one source is blocked, another will appear and take its place. Tariffs could prove to be a huge opportunity for others currently providing goods that are as good or better, but we’re priced out of the market.

Some items cannot absorb the increased pricing, and the trade in them will be curtailed. What will Mexico do with all of the items that are no longer being exported?

The free flow of people across the border is unsustainable for our country. Let’s give the tariffs a chance, and see what effect they have.

Don’t buy into “the sky is falling” rhetoric.

Stocks fluctuate - they’re on sale, buy more. Money is made (and lost) in disruptions.

If you’re worried about a 401k/mutual finds, it’s dollar-cost averaging over a long timeframe, you shouldn’t be looking at daily trends.

If you have stocks, all of your positions should already have stop-limit orders to sell when things drop.

Tariffs are tactics for negotiation, they will hurt Mexico more than the U.S.

It's obvious Mexico isn't trying very hard to close their southern border knowing that most are heading to the U.S., so Trump is putting Mexico under his thumb.

I’m not a fan of tariffs.

But I like how Orange Man is using them as bargaining chips to level the playing field.

Our elected officials have been selling-out US consumers for far too long, including shitty “trade deals” lining their own pockets at our expense.

    There you have it.

This is just Trump negotiating again.

Tariffs may cost us something for a while, but if it forces Mexico to act it will be worth the short term pain.

Hey OP, are you so deluded in you liberal dream that you thought there would be a bunch of bleeding hearts here wanting to cry in your beer? Sure its going to cost us more too. The problem is bigger and in order to MAGA we sacrifice.
You went about this the wrong way. Oh the humanity, we can't do this if it will hurt one old person. Should of gone for the kids.
Oh the humanity. California CHILDREN will be starving in their salad bowls. Young avocado addicts will be eating meat for protein. Illegal aliens will have to buy their kids products that are not "hecho en Mexico." Its gonna be tough for us all

The only people really whining are the ones who moved manufacturing to Mexico - GM, Ford, Chrysler, A/C companies. We get fruit and veggies from the Valley, Ca and China. Auto sales had been predicted ( and are) down 2 yrs ago. No change in assembly, transportation or stocking the shelves so no reason to pass 20% to consumers. Mexico companies pay the tax, (GM, Ford, etc.) not the Gov. Those long lines of semis coming here get taxed. That goes into the treasury but doesn't in anyway cover the cost to us taxpayers taking care of the illegals, health care, schools, welfare, etc. We could also charge a 'conversion' exchange fee on cross borders money transfers. Just like EU does. As for autos, you really think GM could pass 30% 'tariff' onto the US public and survive? Where do you think they sell most autos? Where will the fruit veggie guys sell their stuff? Not China and S.A. doesn't have the cash to buy much.
