That's why the Rolleiflex TLR cameras went out of production for so long. They were indestructible so the people who wanted one either already had one or could rely on the estate market to fulfill their needs.

Then, after decades off the market, they went back into production as luxury goods but that's another sad, infuriating story I won't get into here.

My point is, as long as this thread is talking about classic tech, what are some other examples of things that are no longer made because they just don't wear out? The Porsche prototype long-life car doesn't count because it never made it into production. :)

    benenglish,

Another car that "went out of production" due to being a "niche market" & seldom being driven long enough to wear out (The original 300D literally outlived the PO.) was the PRE-1986 Mercedes 300D.

One of the members of our MB club owns a 1980 NON-TURBO/Euro model with (The last time that I saw Raphael & asked about it) well over a MILLION MILES.
("Ole Blue" originally was bought new by his grandfather, who drove it all of his remaining lifetime, was inherited by an uncle, who drove it until he died & finally ended up in Raphael's care.)

I do NOT believe that a person would ever live long enough to wear-out a low mileage NON-turbo 300D, IF you care for it at least halfway well.

The 300D's weakness, IF they have a weakness, is that the cars are SLOW on "take off" but will effortlessly cruise at 85MPH, while achieving 27-32MPG, all day long in comfort. = My adopted brother (Richard from SC) owns one with the AT & describes his Forest Green/palomino 300D's acceleration as "Zero to 60 in 2 days".
(IF you buy a NON-Turbo model, you have to learn to "get a running start" on the entrance ramp to get onto the Interstate W/O getting RUN OVER. = That is Richard's advice.)

ADDENDA: I bought a WHITE/palomino Euro-model (with the 4speed manual transmission =====> i didn't figure tat i had enough years left to drive a 300D with the AT.) 300D from 1983 to commute in when I lived in VA & commuted to Baltimore 4-5X a week.
(When the Baltimore job ended in 1988, I gave it to my niece Kathleen to drive from Mayesville to Spartanburg, SC every day when she was in college, = Kathleen calls it , "My Little College Car" & will NOT sell it, though she now has a NEW Caddy that she drives most days.)

1964 MATTEL ZERO M SONIC BLASTER BAZOOKA TOY GUN 34 LONG AWESOME

You use the red handle to pump it up, and when you pull the trigger someone could feel the air blast 30 feet away. Banned because kids would put the end of it next to a friends ear and blow out an ear drum...
I had one of those. Wore it out.

Old 1950s gas stoves such as the Wedgewood and O'Keefe Merritt brands are still operating in kitchens, can be purchased used. I have seen vintage refrigerators from the 50s and 60s still working. Cool appliances that are bombproof. Appliance companies nowadays will not build machines like this anymore, planned obsolescence now an industry manufacturing strategy, especially with washers and dryers. Speed Queen might be the last of the old time appliance companies with an eye on the past.

I had an O'Keefe Merritt stove when I lived in Palestine. Took 4 men to move it. Left it with a friend who owned a sandwich shop in town. About 6 months ago I saw a 1986 Curtis Mathis "console" television. Still functional with a great picture.

Curtis Mathis made some really good products years ago. They had a manufacturing plant over in Athens Texas for many years. It closed down long ago though. Palestine had a CM dealer right on Crockett Road for many years too.

My folks had a chest type freezer, International Harvester I think; walls were at least 6" thick and after 46 years it was still working like new when we got rid of it.

Funny thing was when the plastic cannon broke, the hollow metal tube the plastic cannon ball slid down on was a good size for a paper wrapped BB.

I took Dad's hacksaw and cut the tube out of the broken cannon and mounted it in the groove of a piece of 'tongue and groove' plank.

A Black Cat firecracker fit in the tube if you unwrapped some of the paper and I cut a slot with the hacksaw so the fuse would stick out the side.

I bent some nails over the tube (barrel) and cut a slot in the BREACH END of the wood for a penny held in place with the thumb to block the firecracker from spitting in my face.

A paper patched BB and a Black Cat made a pretty cool rifle.

My brother and I would take turns holding it while the other would lite the fuse if we saw a squirrel. Reloading took a while. (unwrapping a firecracker until it fit)

Never hit one because I would always turn my head when the fuse was lit. (I like my eyes)

I'm quite curious as to why you refer to the Mercedes Benz 300D as "niche market" vehicle and that went out of production, or maybe you don't fully understand the definition of the word "niche".

    NICHE:

a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.

And FYI, that five cylinder MB diesel engine was used from 1974 to 2006. Beginning it's genesis from the four cylinder OM616 series into the OM617 series of diesel engines for passenger cars.

Became the OM602 series of MB five cylinder diesel engines.

Then became the OM605 series of five cylinder MB diesel engines.

Then again, evolved into the OM602 series of five cylinder MB diesel engines.

And finally evolved as the last five cylinder MB diesel engine as the OM612 series that lasted until 2006.

I would hardly call the production of an engine series from 1974 to 2006 a "niche market" and went out of production as you said. Mercedes Benz probably produced vehicles in the millions during the lifetime of the production of their five cylinder diesel engine, as well as selling it to other car and vehicle manufacturers for their vehicles. Personally, I'd call a production run of one type of engine of 32 years a pretty long time. I'd also have to wonder just how many of those vehicles are still running and being driven as well. Maybe a few million possibly?
