One and done. Maybe if the train wasn't full it would have been more enjoyable getting here.

I rode Amtruck from SE Washington to San Luis Obispo to visit my folks, maybe 20yrs ago. Rode in coach, just like you did.... NEVER AGAIN!!! Very little enjoyable scenery (all the bad parts of cities), too many stops too often, people coming in noisily al all hour so no sleep, noisy misbehaving kids. Miserable trip!!!

If I wanted to do it again, I'd get a bedroom but it's too expensive... can get flight for same or less.

Other than the experience of doing it once I really don’t see why anyone would travel by train. Tickets are about what airfare would be, yet takes just as long or longer than going by bus. I’ve never priced out a bus ticket, but I can’t imagine it being more than a couple hundred $

Shared with the dregs of humanity. You couldn't pay ME enough to do that!

Just for traveling a long distance, I'll pass, too.

However, there are a number of trains that run solely as destinations by themselves, offering scenic viewing that makes them worthwhile for some folks. They're basically like less equipped cruise ships with scenery that's not monotonous and occasionally spectacular.

IOW, there are one or two US train trips I'd like to take.

Guy I met on the train was traveling from LA to NYC, he saw a lot of great scenery and train wasn't as crowded going from LA to Chicago.

I was reading about someone taking a trip out of Longview and the train was delayed 10 hour's. I think I would have cancelled if my trip started out that way.

That's the Southwest Chief, one of Amtrak's most scenic routes. The Empire Builder, Seattle to Chicago, is also supposed to be great.

Too bad both of those begin and end in cities I dislike.

I guess when I said there are a couple of train trips I'd like to take, I should've gotten off Amtrak and not specified US. There are short trips in the US like the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic in Colorado (64 miles topping out at 12 mph behind a coal engine) but the trip I've always wanted to take is the Copper Canyon train through Chihuahua.

Ben, we did a lot of research on both ElChepe and “Chepe Express” across Northern Mexico a year or so back, and decided to not go.

When one consults the “reviews” many problems emerge.

There are ways to take PARTS of the ride, which. may be more convenient.

Thanks for the heads-up. If it ever looks like a possibility for me, I'm sure I'll do enough research to find the same reviews. I'll act accordingly.
