While it is legal for an officer to temporarily disarm you for his safety during the stop, this officer's reaction was over the top. I have stopped dozens of CHL holders over the years. Most ask if I want to see the gun. I just want to know where it is and ask them to keep their hands where I can see them. A CHL holder is NOT a problem 99.99999% of the time. I try to stress this to my younger officers. This newer generation of officers lacks some of the "common sense" of MY generation!

On a side note, we had one knucklehead who preferred to use his weapon mounted light when approaching a car on a night time traffic stop! A big reason he is a civilian now.

Wow. I've had two traffic stops while carrying. Once by city traffic cop. When I told him I was carrying all he said was not to reach for it. He also didn't give me a ticket. The second time by a county deputy. I had two guns, one on me and another laying under my jacket in the passenger seat. Again, when I informed him he asked if they were loaded. I said yes. He said don't reach for them. But he did issue me a ticket, and I had to take a class to get it dismissed.

Odd how different cops do things differently. Or maybe I just don't look like a threat.:)

At gunpoint he ordered YOU to put your hands on the firearm to hand it to him? Uhmmm you were very close to getting shot and killed by a geriatric 300lb Fife. He would have been hoisted as a hero and given a vacation.

IIWM I would have asked for a supervisor and refused to touch the weapon. AT least after he killed me he wouldn't have gotten his vacation.

About as far away from being a cop basher as you can get, but that there is a mouthful of fact! :)

Then again, the same can be said of a good part of the current culture.

Ha. Glad im not the only one who thought that.

Gun in hand and all the officer has to say is you flexed, slightly turned...just about anything and he can justify lighting you up.

Cops gun down man for legally carrying firearm Here is the other side of the story. Do some research on this story, you'll be surprised how close you are as a CHL holder to execution. Many witnesses said that he had no gun in his hand, it was IWB, and was ordered by LE to "drop the weapon" or something to that extent.

I am not surprised at all about these stories. What surprises me is how many in the gun community worship cops.

I get the paranoia even if I think it's way over the top but I don't get the reasoning here. If he is willing to lye and shoot you, your touching your gun wouldn't matter a bit. There is no gun in hand rule for police shootings so a cop could almost always get away with shooting someone who is armed. Now maybe some think that handing the gun to the cop may make him so nervous that he twitches and shoots you, but aside from that he could do the same thing as you get out of a car and just say you where moving your hand towards your gun.

I passed a cop today. He didn't even look at me but I know he wanted to drag me out of the truck, taze me, beat me, and shoot me before urinating on my dead body. Fuckin cops.

Lets all talk shit about them and always assume their guilt. I bet the stories of the tiny fraction who are bad will make the news and we can use that to destroy the credibility of law enforcement everywhere.

Then if anyone tries to interject reason we can call them a "cop worshipper" to take away their credibility and make it seem like they have a skewed viewpoint and will refuse to accept the truth even though the majority of cops are actually pretty good guys.

    Yup, that's what we'll do.

He must have been on break.

Yes. That is exactly what im saying. All cops are bad always in all ways. Come on! Too many of them do ridiculous things too often and get away with it.

Yes they are to be held to a higher standard. That knife cuts both ways.

I'll go out on a limb and say on record I believe why some people have such negative experiences with "cops" is the disconnect between the event and its participants. Similar to how "the government" is doing this and that, it's "cops" are doing this and that. This line of thinking is fundamentally flawed. People make decisions, not faceless entities. We, as a society, have been brainwashed into seeing the job rather than the person. That's how we end up with career politicians that have all but ruined the political establishment. People don't vote for politicians, they vote for their 'team.' As long as their team has a celebrity player or two to root for, people are all too happy to be cheerleaders.

But cops, well we interact directly with them and often when we don't want to. When "a cop" approaches your door on a traffic stop, that's still a person who woke up, sat on the pot, took a shower, and went to work. That person is going to make choices, good and bad, just like you will. That person is going to react to you, just like you're going to react to him/her. Either party can start an ego fueled competition, and lead the situation straight into a dark hole. If you have already decided in your mind the guy walking towards your window is your adversary, what chance does he have to NOT be? Now I'm not saying lay down and show your belly, but being open and friendly certainly will not hurt - especially for simple revenue stops...err..traffic stops. If dude is being short and gruff, he might have just had a bad day. We all do. A little light conversation might just remind him you're not yet another jerk he's met along the way. Then again he might be a certified jackwad. Won't know unless you give him a chance though. I may not have ever been in LE, but I could understand getting a little cold and callous at the end of a particularly tiresome day. I could see learning to not give a crap about people if day in and day out they make you feel like there's no person behind the badge.
