In addition to my gun & backup gun, I always carry a knife - sometimes two. Uh oh! I never go anywhere without a folder or auto (OTF or switchblade) and if I am carrying a fixed blade on my belt, I still have a folder or auto in my pocket.

...because I feel like it, and because...

    wait for it...

    I can.

Not safe? How so? Gonna have to agree to disagree on that point. I take firearm safety very, very seriously.

In a physical altercation not rising to the level of deadly force you now have two firearms to secure. Moreover, I would suggest additional mag or two.

I was highly involved in "officer safety" studies and backup firearms simply provide a false sense of security. Risks greater than benefit in my opinion based on years of experience as an LEO. Yet, there are those with similar backgrounds who would disagree with me.

I respect that view, especially from an LEO perspective. But what about regular citizens. What physical altercation could we possibly find ourselves in that does "not rise to the level of deadly force?" I'm not talking family altercations or with children.

Thugs/gangbangers sometimes like to close in on you and get in your space. You will either get clocked or get your ass stabbed in that situation.

Nobody comes into my physical space without risk of getting knocked away or getting shot.

    If you want to.....do it..

If you don't want to.... then don't.

It isn't right, it isn't wrong...it is what it is.

There are opinions on both sides, and that is all...just opinions.

and that, is just my humble opinion.

Why two guns? Why not multiple mags and just be happy with that?

There are a million and one reasons where a second gun would be useful. The most obvious is that your gun has some kind of SERIOUS failure. Most of the others refer to entanglement problems. Losing your gun in a fight(like getting it knocked away), having your semi-auto go down because your attacker had a hand on your slide when you fire a round, going to the backup first because it is a revolver and you want to avoid that type of failure, etc. etc. etc.

I personally carry a knife to solve a lot of those problems.

Avoid confrontation; don't bring attention to yourself that you are a gun-toting person (which includes not using your CHL as normal ID); avoid environments which increase probability of violence; take the path of least resistance to avoid an altercation of any sort, if possible, flee; keep your firearm in good working order - taking these steps help prevent any necessity to have a backup firearm.

That's good advice. I don't carry a backup gun, maybe an extra mag. Like v-tach said, carry an extra gun if it makes your happy. I would also add any martial art training if possible.

I carry an extra mag. More than that is usually not necessary. Most shootings occur within 3 to 6 feet and with an avg 3 rounds fired.
