The Africa thread talk of eating zebra reminded me that I have in fact, eaten horse meat.

My grandparents were very poor. They received various canned goods from the .gov (state version) back in the early 70's. One of the meals I had when we visited was canned horse meat. VERY stringy, odd taste but with some strong gravy it was OK.
my uncle worked for a packing plant many years ago as a mechaniche told me they shipped lots of horsemeat to europe and the middle east i saw lots of beuautiful horses that were killed for meat!

    deemus,

'Canned' anything doesn't fairly represent edibles.

I recall 'one time' eating canned asparagus...horrible, and canned spinach, Yuck!

Then as an adult, I eventually had both 'fresh'. What an enormous difference.

I love fresh asparagus and spinach...wonderful stuff.

I would imagine the same for 'canned' horse meat.

Gotta be fresh for the best...

from my understanding horse meat isn't legal in united states for human consumption

    OK, back to weird foods.

    Ever eaten Quahogs? (bivalve/hardshell clams)

Mostly, they're harvested in the Northeast, but they're available here.

I've harvested them in Christmas Bay (near Galveston) and made Quahog chow-dah with em.

That's a very yankee dish, but it's good, and I can see some turning their noses away...

Me, if it's food, I don't care where it's popular if it tastes good.

I've eaten them. Not in "chow-dah" as you mention, but steamed in garlic white wine sauce. Often.

Can't be too different from clam chowder, and that's a favorite of mine. Yankee origin be damned, it's good eating.

There used to be a horse slaughterhouse in the town I lived in back in IL called Cavel. They exported the meat to Europe. The animal "activists" raised a stink and eventually the state made it illegal to process horse meat for human consumption. If you haven't heard, Illinois (Chicago) loves to virtue signal. The legal fight went on for a few years but Cavel eventually closed taking all the jobs and tax revenue with it.
